Hi how can i secure my linksys wrt54g. i followed the steps of the install cd and it works but I do not see how to secure it from outsiders using my wireless

What you are asking about is called Wep security and is available in your router control panel ("http://" whatever your router is set to) then go to wireless>security and setup a Wep key. You can also go to this web page for more info:

it this for initial setup of your router?

you can run the setup cd that came with it and follow the step by step instructions, and hope it will work as smooth as possible, but if not, can you please provide the following:

Your Internet Service Provider?
The modem your using?
the exact model number of your linksys unit?
the Operating System of your pc
and your location.

The quickest/easiest is to boot your PC attached to the modem through an Ethernet cable without the WRT54G. Pop in the CD installer and allow the installer program to run. Closely follow on screen instructions. At some point you would be asked to reboot and connect the LinkSys using another Ethernet cable. Once rebooted, the program will auto configure the router and you should be be able to use it. Of course the PC must be set to "Auto Obtain IP Address".
