Saw was in use. After priming I pulled the started cord started with choke engaged. When the engine cranks . I tstart with out the choke engaged. The Unit never turns over and stalls. The plug looked good . No excessive carbon Build up is evident. The plug is two years old with busy use in the winter. I will replace the plug then go from there.

Hi. Beside where the fuel line go through there should be a small nut with a spring beneath it. Turn that slightly to allow more fuel through. ONLY DO IT A FRACTION AT A TIME.

OK - let's work through this. If you need choke all the time then the mixture is too weak when the choke is off. Putting the choke on literally chokes off the air supply to the engine by lowering a small shutter across the entrance to the carburettor. That means either there is too much air getting to the engine (don't see how!!) or too little fuel. So, how do we get too little fuel? You could check for this as follows;
- before we do anything tricky let's check the obvious things - is there a fresh fuel mix in the tank? Petrol does go off, especially if there is 2 -stroke oil added to it. If it's over a month old from the pump mix up a fresh batch. Is the idle speed set too low so the engine stalls when the choke is knocked off? You can see this screw to one side of the carburettor (you need to remove the top lid in front of the handle on the chain saw, and then remove the air filter to see it). Turn the screw half a turn clockwise to speed the engine up. Be warned - if the engine starts it will run faster than normal and that means the chain may start to spin around. Also - check that the chain brake is off (i.e. the safety lever is pulled backwards, and that the chain is free to move BEFORE you attempt to start)
- is the fuel filter blocked? To get to this, make a wire hook (e.g. thick fuse wire) and gently hook out the fuel filter that's sitting at the bottom of the fuel tank, and take a look at it (be gentle - you can damage the gauze if you are clumsy). Does the gauze look clear? I.e. if you dip it into petrol it will freely run into the filter and of course drain out when you lift it? If not, replace it.
- next stop - are the jets in the carburettor set right? I don't have a service manual for this (and I know the manual says unhelpfully "return for service") but basically you will have seen two holes on the side of the chain saw (below the handle) two small 0.8cm holes; one marked 'L' (for low speed) and the other 'H' (for high). Put a fine flat screwdriver down the L hole and feel for the slot of the low speed jet. Once engaged turn it out half a turn and this will enrich the mixture - if this seems to help and you can start the engine then adjust the L jet in or out until the engine is idling comfortably. If it idles too quickly then you can also turn down the idle screw (see previous paragraph).
- no luck still? Well, it could be fuel pump or a blocked jet in the carburettor but this really is a 'return to the service centre' task!

Try a new fuel filter--they tend to plug if sitting in fuel over the winter. It's possible that the carburetor needs cleaning for the same reason. Make sure the screws and nuts are tight on the carburetor. Check the muffler for plugging. Hope this helps!

Probably with the carburetor, fuel lines, and fuel filter. Check the air cleaner and muffler for plugging. Make sure the fuel lines are not decayed or damaged. If the above does not help, then remove the carburetor, clean it with spray carburetor cleaner, and check the two diaphragms for hardness or any damage. Check the impulse pumping passage behind the carburetor which may be plugged or is open to the air. Any fault with these pulsations will prevent the carburetor from pumping fresh fuel into itself while running. Hope this helps!

Put fresh fuel/oil 50:1 mix in the fuel tank. Turn on ignition, set fast idle and full choke. Prime the carb, if it has a pump bulb for that.

Holding saw so it can't move at you, pull the starter smartly for at most 5 times or until it "pops". If it pops, take choke off and pull starter until it starts.
Else, take choke off and crank it maybe 5 times until it runs, or go to full choke again for maybe 3 cranks.
Keep alternating sets of pulls with/without full choke until you get a pop, or give up. All the above is for the general case- shouldn't take many cranks for modern saws to get one running.

Pay attention for safety to how you hold the saw, like maybe with the rear of the rear handle located inside your right knee.

Starting a poulan 18 inch widthing chainsaw

Start by filling the fuel tank with a fresh mix of 50-1, fill the chain oil tank with non fling chain oil, sit the saw on the ground with the bar away from any obstructions, engage the chainbrake, switch the ignition on, press the fuel bulb as many times as it takes to 3/4 fill the bulb, pull the choke out, this should also engage the fast idle, crank the engine until it fires once, it will not run on choke, it is importent at this point you must push the choke back in, now crank the engine until it runs, flick the trigger to allow the saw to idle.

Thanks but my new model 450 doesn't have a blue choke like the others I have owned. This has a sngle lever and goes up to start and down to kill. I push it up, prime it,decompress and pull. It hits...

The start procedure is done on one red lever, as you say prime till the bulb is 3/4 full, push deco vave in, pull the red lever out against the spring and right up, this engages choke and part throttle, pull until it fires once, push red lever down to dissengae choke, then pull again until it starts, flick the throttle trigger to release the part throttle and bring the engine to idle,if all is correct it should start within three to four pulls, if not it needs tuning on the carb screws.

Have new 450 and is very difficult to start. Lost or didn't get book. How do I start it and re-start it while still warm??

Start procedure is, push the primer as many times as it takes to 3/4 fill the bulb ( you cannot over prime it ) pull the blue choke lever fully out,place the saw on the ground with your right boot through the back handle, crank the engine until it fires once, do not continue to crank the engine with the choke out ( they will not run on choke, only fire ) push the choke fully home, crank the engine until it starts, blip the throttle trigger to bring the saw to idle, warm engine, pull the choke fully out and push in again without cranking engine, this will engage the part throttle, crank the engine until it starts, blip the throttle to bring the engine to idle.

It should start easily, start with fresh fuel/oil, pump the primer as many times as it takes to 3/4 fill the bulb, pull the choke fully out, crank the engine until it fires once, push the choke fully in and crank again until it fires up, after re fueling a warm engine, pump the primer again until it 3/4 fills the bulb,before cranking the engine pull the choke fully out and in again( this will engage the part throttle ) then crank the engine until it fires up.

2nd use of chainsaw pp3516avx, it won't start, choke lever will not stay extended. I followed the instructions to start and nothing works

The choke system is connected to the half throttle position, if you lift the throttle trigger the choke pull will automatically return, whilst trying to start do not lift the throttle trigger, the starting procedure is, pump the primer bulb as many times as it takes to 3/4 fill the bulb, pull the choke pull fully out, this will switch the saw on and engage the half throttle, crank the engine until it fires once, do not continue to pull,it will actually not run on full choke, if you do continue to crank with the choke fully out, you will very quickly flood the engine, now push the choke fully in, now crank the engine until it fires up, lift the throttle trigger once, this will dissengage the half throttle, and it should now come down to idle.

Can anyone help with fuel mix and starting instructions for McCulloch 2214av chainsaw please

Ok, always use good quaility teo stroke oil, from a manufacturer who actually produces a chainsaw, ie Husqvarna/Stihl/Jonsered etc, all of these oils should be run at 50-1, avoid oil makes you have never heard of.
Starting instructions are as follows, switch the red ignition switch too on ( up ) depress the primmer bulb as many times as it takes to 3/4 fill the bulb ( you cannot flood the engine if you over prime, it is better to over prime ) pull the blue choke fully out, crank the engine until it fires once ( it will only fire once, do not continue to crank the engine after it first fires with the choke still out ) now push the choke fully back in, crank the engine until it fires up and runs on fast idle,now blip the throttle trigger to diss engage the fast idle position, the saw should now drop down to idle.

Flooding want start(New Carb)

Give the chainsaw a break by turning everything off. Flip off the on/off switch. Turn the throttle off. Push or pull the choke to the off position and deal with anything else that might need to be switched off (off is the key word). Some even suggest removing the spark plug, pulling the cord a couple of times, then replacing the plug.
By doing all this you will make the saw (and you) more comfortable and start the process of clearing a flooded engine. Just as important, you've given yourself a minute or two more to recoup.

Flooding usually prevents a saw from starting. Flooding is the major cause of a stalled chain saw engine. Flooding is caused by too much gas applied at the wrong time. You need to prevent or remedy the flooding effect. The rebooting step (step #2) will improve this condition. Another suggestion loggers make is pulling the engine's cord through 8 times with all systems off. I don't know if this actually drains the liquid gas or gives a bit more time to counteract the excess liquid gas but I am assured it works. Do it 8 times!

Now. Set the on/off switch in the "on" position. The throttle "on" position should be turned on only as a last resort. Actually, I am told some late-model chainsaws specifically instruct you to tweak the throttle - so do it if instructed. Put the choke to the "on" position. The procedure in step #3 helps clear the engine of too much "liquid" gasoline. Again, putting down the saw down for a cup of coffee or soda will sometimes do the same thing.
OK. Everything should be back on..

Make sure you have the choke in the "on" position. When you do, pull the engine cord several times through until the engine "pops" one time. A pop is a quick audible response and **** by the engine without cranking. Please, NO more than one pop with choke on or you risk another fatal flood.
PLACE THE CHOKE IN THE OFF POSITION NOW!

With the choke in the off position, pull the engine's crank cord through again. The engine should start in 1 to 3 pulls. Try it first without using the throttle control (unless recommended by the manufacturer). Colder weather or a saw just out of storage can complicate these instructions. Here is further advice from an About Forestry Forum poster: "If I haven't gotten a pop in four pulls I transition to the part throttle, no-choke position and if I haven't gotten a start in maybe 8 pulls I return to the choke position for one or two pulls. I am sure this varies with different chainsaws, but you shouldn't have to pull very many times in the choke position, even in cold weather."

It won't start.

Prime away... on a chainsaw it does NOT squirt fuel into carb. It draws fuel from tank, through carb, and returns it to tank.
Using the choke however will flood it in a second once it has fired. with a good fuel supply, 99.5 % of chainsaw won't start problems are flooded. Lou

Will not start - brand new

i bought a new dirtbike as a kid n same thing.it turned out ,it needed to be a synthedic oil in the mix.try seeing for spark to begin with by putting sparkplug in the wire n touching diode to the engine block while pulling the cord.thats a good starting point to diagnosing your problem.maybe try warming it up in the house then try starting it with no choke needed.the saws i ve used needed you to give it throttle after you pull,n no throttle with choke.
