Depending on what that 'gunk' is, will determine your best course of action. If it is food byproducts from the wash process and you've not cleaned out the filter, you should remove as much of that gunk with a dishtowel and warm water, then use white vinegar to break down any other leftover material. Rinse with clean warm water. Check the filter and clean it after each wash process to make sure you aren't restricting drain water from being pumped out. Once you've removed th emajority of that material, you could run a dishless wash cycle on the sanitary setting to clean out anything that remained... Hope this helps...
