Here is an article with some ideas on how to solve issues with an external hard disk.

If it does not work, one last option is to take the hard disk out of the case and connect it directly to the SATA or IDE interface in your computer.

My computer does not recognize my Western Digital (WD3200C032) External Hard drive. The hard drive orignally worked fine. Then one day 3 separate computers would not recongize when the USB was plugged into...

if u are using a external hard disk case with the normal hard disk
try connecting your hard disk with a new casing.
if it is made as a external hard disk change the cable .
because after a few time usage the cable will not be quite good as new.
After inserting the usb cable in your pc if it shows any warning
information, or any message just give me that too for exact solution

Ebook 320 external hard drive

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the MyBook on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

Unable to access elements hard drive

Hiya dtwhite... I would suggest that the hard drive has died.. "Elements" are notorious for giving up the ghost, and normally around the 13months mark! I had a 320gb hard drive with exactly the same symptoms. Lost a helluva lot of music and photos!

One sure fire way of eliminating, whether it is just the leads at fault, or connections.. on the unit .. which very rarely it can be.. is to take out the hard drive and connect direct to your pc.. as a slave.. ( Do you know how?)... you may get lucky and find it still works... I would suggest though that if you are.. move evrything off ASAP on to something a little more reliable like a Western Digital... Never had a prob with this brand.. or indeed Toshiba! who are relatively new to the hard drive world. Use your Elements purely as an absolute emergency backup drive.

Remember to earth yourself and comp before removing or replacing anything.. or it will turn out to be an expensive exercise.
You require any help with jumper settings let me know

regards Faggly
