    This answer does not solve my problem. It is a very poor solution. I need the technical specifications for my crown to purchase a replacement in the aftermarket. Look forward to your reply.

    I need the technical specifications of my vintage longines watch cal 284 18k gold hand wind 40 yrs old.

  • LIM JOO HAI Aug 25, 2011

    Your answer is no good. I had search ebay already, but no answer. I only want the technical specifications of my longines crown, cal 284 18k gold hand wind. Please comply.

  • LIM JOO HAI Aug 25, 2011

    This is not the answer. What you have given is the specifications of the watch outer dimensions. I need the specifications of the crown and not the watch physical dimensions.

  • LIM JOO HAI Aug 25, 2011

    Found nothing. Please give another solution.

  • LIM JOO HAI Aug 25, 2011

    I did not expect you expert to give silly solution. You stated the crown as 34mm. This is incorrect. The 34mm is the diamenter of the case and not the crown . the crown diameter is about 5mm. I want the crown opening diameter and the stem size.

  • LIM JOO HAI Aug 25, 2011

    No expert answers.Problem still unsolved. I want a refund!!

You will need to take the watch to a jeweler or a watch maker to get the correct crown.

Is this your watch?

LONGINES Mans Wristwatch, 18 k Yellow Gold Snap - Back Case, Ref. 8541 -4, original Crown with Longines - Logo, silvered original Dial, embossed Gold Markers and Longines - Logo, Sweep Second, gold Index - Hands, 17 Jewel Movement, Cal. 284, Shock - Protection Incabloc , Fine - Regulator, Leatherband, Switzerland, ca 1974, Diameter ca. 34 mm, total Height ca. 9 mm

This is all of the information you should require in order to purchase a crown and I am sure your particular watch is vintage (probably 1965-1971) you can purchase the crown directly from a Longines Service Center or from Longines Corporate as they continued to use this classic style for a good quantity of watches, even in the present day. Go to Longines.com and under customer service you will see where to purchase "spare parts".

    You wrote "I need the technical specifications of my vintage longines watch cal 284 18k gold hand wind 40 yrs old. These are the technical specs. for your watch. What is it you really are after? I cannot give you more than that and nor will any one else. You ask for information, I provide it and you do not specify what you are really after.

    SO NOW, WHAT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ARE YOU AFTER. LONGINES ONLY SUPPORTS SPARE PART LIFE FOR 15 YEARS AFTER A WATCH IS RETIRED. YOURS WAS JUST RETIRED. TO GET THE ORIGINAL PART, YOU NEED TO CONTACT LONGINES. SORRY IF THIS IS TOO CLEAR FOR YOU.

Hi limjoohai,

Longines guarantees the availability of its spare parts during a minimum of 15 years from the date of the production stop of the watch model concerned.If this period has elapsed and the spare parts are no longer available, they suggest that you send your watch via a Longines authorized service centre to the Longines head office in Switzerland for a repair estimation.

In the large majority of cases, they are able to find a solution for repairing your watch properly even many years after the minimal duration of 15 years has elapsed.

If you need spare parts for your Longines watch, contact the nearest authorized Longines service centre in your country. You will find its address in your guarantee booklet or on their website in the Customer Service section.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

What would be the value of my vintage watch?

It looks like a gold filled case and of course it's a standard wind. I would put a value on your watch if it is in running order of $100.00. This may not be what you could get for it but if it was being sold in good running condition that would be a fair price. Hope this helps, gabe.

How to set pocket watch

Hi John, There are several possiblitites depending on the watch you have. If it is a battery watch you set it like most modern watches by pulling the pendant and the hands should move. If it is a vintage watch it may set the same way. If gentle pulling the crown does not work try this. Your watch may be a lever set watch. This requires removing the crystal of your watch will be screwed on. If it doesn't loosen easily try putting the watch between your palms and twist. Once the crystal and bezel loosen remove it and set it aside. Now look near the 2 o'clock position. A lever set watch will have a small metal piece sticking up that is designed to be hooked with your fingernail and pulled out. When in the out position your watch will now be in the setting position and your hands will move when you rotate the crown. After setting push the lever back in and you will now be in the winding position. Replace the crystal and carefully screw it down but not too tightly. There are other systems but I am guessing this will cover your watch. Merry Christmas

How do you wind the watch

I looked you your watch on the Longines web site and it would appear that your watch is self winding.

To wind it, hold it level and swing it from side to side for about 100 times. This should be enough to make it start working.

Self winding watch will run up to 3 days (depending on make and model), so if you take it off, then it will eventually stop. These watches thrive on being worn, so wearing them most days (with an interval of not more than two days, will keep them running.

I WOULD LIKE TO ITS TRUE VALUE

mcdevito75 here, Many factors figure in the value of a watch, Of course you have a NAME watch Longines which helps a great deal, First, if the hands are thick, the watch is before 1969, if they are thin, anywhere after 1969, Original strap or band conts, a good, good replacement band is ok. the appearance of the watch, no scratches opr buffing, scrapping on the caseing, no scratches or cracks in the crystal (glass) of course being vintage there will be some evidence of age, and lastly time keeping, if your Longines works well keeps time all day, I estmate it"s value, anywhere from $125.00--------- $200.00. You can also check a small watch repair shop in your area or jewelery shop, they will usually give a rough estmate of value for free.

How do i change the date on a 1960's longines Admiral?

If you pull out crown gently, you will notice there are two clicks (positions), not just one. So the first click, when crown is not pulled out fully, is exactly for day/date adjustment. If you pull the crown further out, watch is in hand adjustment mode. Try it carefully and you will find out the right position.

Face almost unreadable;can only adjust winding back;stops intermittently.

Hi Murbilpov,

thank you for using fixya, you have a very fine piece of jewelry. it appears that your watch needs cleaning right on the knob and adjust mechanism. as per a service document from longines, a possible build-up or a broken first gear may cause this issue.

you may refer to their official statement when it comes to cleaning and having the watch repaired.

1) Where should I send a Longines watch that needs to be repaired, adjusted or serviced?If your Longines watch needs to be repaired, adjusted or serviced, werecommend that you bring or send it (well padded and by registereddelivery in the latter case) to your nearest Longines authorizedservice centre. You will find its address in your guarantee booklet oron our website in the Customer Service section.
2) Is the repair of a Longines watch that is more than 20 years old still possible?Yes, we still repair vintage watches at our head workshop in St-Imier.
However, without having the watch to hand, it is impossible for us tojudge its state and to know if all the necessary spare parts for therepair are still available.
Therefore, we kindly suggest that you send your watch via the nearest Longines authorized servicecentre to the Longines head office in Switzerland. Upon receipt andafter analysis of your watch, we will send you our comments and a priceestimate for the repair of your watch.
3) How often do you recommend having a maintenance service carried out on a Longines watch?We would like to draw your attention to the fact that a watch used daily is running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week non-stop.
The frequency of the maintenance service depends on the type of watch, the climate and the care taken by the watch wearer.
In general, it is necessary to have your watch controlled andserviced at least once every 4 - 5 years, just like any other precisemechanical device. This guarantees the reliability and rate precisionof your watch.
4) Which operations are included in a complete maintenance service?The following operations should be included in the price of a complete maintenance service:
– complete dismantling of the movement, cleaning, oiling, reassembling, regulating and the checking of functions;
– repair or replacement of movement components that are either worn or faulty;
–replacement of the following parts: glass, crown, push-pieces, sealsand battery if a quartz calibre (parts included in the price of theservice, with the exception of shaped mineral glasses and sapphirecrystals);
– restoration of the water-resistance (if a water-resistant model);
– refurbishing of the case or bracelet (two-tone, gold-plated and PVD-coated cases and bracelets, cleaning only);
The above service standards are only valid for the Longines head office in Switzerland.
5) Which operations are included in a partial maintenance service?The following operations should be included in the price of a partial maintenance service:
– during each partial basic repair, Longines undertakes to check theregulation of the movement and replace the glass (if necessary), thepipe, the crown, the push-pieces, the seals and the battery in the caseof a quartz movement (these parts are included in the price, with theexception of shaped mineral glasses, sapphire crystals, and restorationservices carried out on the dial, case and bracelet. Parts made out ofnoble metals will be invoiced separately);
– restoration of the water-resistance (if a water-resistant model) and cleaning of the case and bracelet;
Any repair that necessitates the replacement of a part, or any servicementioned in point 7 automatically involves a partial basic service.
The above service standards are only valid for the Longines head office in Switzerland.

Hope this helps, should you have other questions, please do not hesitate to let me know.

regards,

voodoo
