After using this HDD for 1 yr suddenly one day the transfer rate dropped crazily, when i checked it says, This USB can perform faster. Initially i thought it was my laptop but when i connected that to different laptops and i realized that it was my Hard disk. Hard disk does not let me update my USB drivers, it says already up to date. Has anyone faced a similar issue?

I'm no expert, and don't profess to have the answer, but if a device is performing tat USB 2 capacity then suddenly doesn't, and another device performs at USB 2 capacity on the same port, then there has to be an issue with the problem device itself, or possibly an update may have caused a specific, device related incompatibilty issue.
I had the same USB problem on a 2.5 External drive a while back, it also would suddenly shut down during transfer for no apparent reason, I replaced the case and problem solved, it goes like the clappers!!!! Clearly it was something to do with the old enclosure itself.
At the moment, I've suddenly developed the same problem with a 500gb External that up until now has been working absolutely fine. All my other External Drives, a couple 250gb and a couple 350gb, are IDE while this is a SATA, but I don't really think that's either here nor there, as the 2.5 I had issues with is IDE.
This case is under warranty so I've sent it back for testing.
I've spent hours looking for answers, and can't help but wonder if in some cases a lack of power, or loose connection is the issue. The only real difference between my Externals is the actual setups. I wonder if maybe, with plugging and unplugging, they get a bit worn over time, and simply fail to connect correctly.
My old External drives, a couple 8 years old, have solid aluminium cases, with the drives screwed firmly into place as in a desktop. They're solid as a rock, and haven't missed a beat. There's plenty of cord between the devices and adapters, so there's no drag on the connections.
On the other hand, my problem external has no screws, just sort of keepers that are supposed to hold it in place, but don't in fact. There's quite some space between it and the other end of the case/enclosure, certainly it's no snug fit, the drive inside has some movement, so that there's a certain amount of give when you plug into the interface. Also, there's very little length between the adapter and device, I have to be careful where I put it to maintain a good connection Similarly, my problem 2.5 originally had no screws either, just makes me wonder.
No real answers sorry, but some of it may help point someone in the right direction.

Off hand it sounds like you are using a usb 2.0 or higher device on a usb 1.0 or 1.1.

i have the exact same problems with the drive on different computers, and i am deffineately plugged into a 2.0 usb slot
Im having the same issue, but i know for a fact the port it is plugged into is a USB 2.0 port. My other external and thumb drives work fine on the same port. I even tried connecting it to the port my printer is on (which is listed as operating as a USB 2.0 device in Device Manage). Ive tried every port on my system which are ALL usb 2.0 ports, and nothing. still get the "this device can prefrorm faster" and insanely slow transfer speeds
I have the same problem with the Simpletech mini 320GB USB 2.0 drive. It's been working fine for the last couple of months, but when I installed the latest Vista patches (which I hadn't done in a couple of months), the transfer rate dropped to USB 1.1 speeds and I keep getting the "This device can perform faster" message no matter what port I plug it into. I get the same message and slow transfer speeds if I plug it into my laptop running XP. Also, I know that in both cases they are USB 2.0 drives (the hardware is relatively new and the enhanced controller appears in the device list). I've also manually uninstalled the drivers from all USB devices, rebooted the system and let the system discover the USB deives and reload the drivers, but to no avail. Evidently, this problem is not unique to a particular drive type or a specific Windows OS.
I have the same problem with the Acomdata 320GB "Hi-speed" USB 2.0 Hard Drive. It only works at 12mbit/s plugged into my USB hi-speed 2.0 iBook G4 and won't operate at all when plugged into a belkin hi-speed USB 2.0 powered hub that both operate at 480mbit/s with other hi-speed external hard drives.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to test the same drive with different computers.
Oh ,yes . I have the Exactly Same problem with my simple tech 250 GB external hard , And my Dell Vostro 1500 , After About 6 month . Say "this device can perform faster " But i don't know why ? i didn't change anything in my laptop or my external hard . Really Nothing Change . and also i wast 2 day in internet for this problem , many answer was not work , such as "Update your driver" , .... .
At all i hope to find a solution for this problem ...

Listen!! I own a 250Gb and I had the same problem, I did re-install the USB port drives, but nothing! I have spent ALOT of time now in the net looking for answers and the verdict is this...

I bought it because it is "Pininfarina" design, but the reality is that the quality is very poor, and has no ventilation. (did not research it before buy)
Most reviews claim this particular product is ****, and that an eminent clink sound will appear, and after that the hd would not be readable.
It seems that the usb reading card inside is poor quality, and that heat, impacts, or just because, will eventually fail.
(of course you can open it, in case this happen, and move the actual Disc to a External enclosure, with ventilation (key element in HD failure) and with luck the data is uncorrupted)
But for now, I need my precious data intact, so I am transferring it while it last to a new HD... reviewed hundreds on the net, and most fail too!!! so finally narrow it down to G-Technology Drives... Yes, they are more expensive, but losing all of my data there is no money on earth that can help..
These HD are designed with many heat dissipation features, and top quality. These are not sold at usual consumer stores like Staples.. I only found them in MacMall / PcMall... they seem to be professional grade.
I am very happy I found a way to have my data safe (I also backup to DVDs) but need constant access to it, and these HD are the best my wallet can afford for now.
