DVD-RW
It is the re-recordable version of the DVD-R. To use this type of media you will need to buy a DVD-RW recorder. The DVD-RW recorders usually record DVD-R, CD-R and CD-RW media, too. Similarly to what happens to DVD-R, DVD-RW disks can be played in newer commercial DVD players without any problems. Older commercial devices cannot recognize the media, refusing to play the disk. To play a DVD-RW disk, commercial players need the disk to be finished. After finishing the disk, you can only record new data in it by reformatting it, which makes you lose all the recorded data.

DVD+RW

It is the re-recordable version of the DVD+R and everything that was said about the DVD+R is valid for the DVD+RW. Only the newest DVD players play movies recorded in disks using this format. There are recorders on the market that can record both DVD-RW disks and DVD+RW ones. These recorders are called DVD?±RW. Similarly to the DVD-RW, the disk needs to be finished to be played in commercial DVD players, and to record new data in the disk after having finished it requires reformatting it, which makes all the data in it to be erased. DVD+RW recorders are usually capable of reading DVD-RW disks (but not of recording them) and vice-versa.

What is the difference between DVD+R and DVD-R thanks.

DVD-R and DVD+R are two competing technologies that use different formats. No single company owns either DVD format and both technologies have their advantages. DVD-R/RW was developed by Pioneer. Based on CD-RW technology, it uses a similar pitch of the helix, mark length of the 'burn' for data, and rotation control. DVD-R/RW is supported by the DVD Forum, an industry-wide group of hardware and software developers, and computer peripheral manufacturers. The DVD-R format has been standardized in ECMA-279 by the Forum, but this is a private standard, not an 'industry' ISO standard like the CD-R/RW Red Book or Orange Book standard. DVD+R/RW is also based on CD-RW technology. DVD+R/RW is supported by Sony, Philips, HP, Dell, Ricoh,Yamaha, and others, and has recently been endorsed by Microsoft. DVD+R/RW is not supported by the DVD Forum, but the Forum has no power to set industry standards, so it becomes a market-driven issue.

Dought

DVDs are produced in different formats for different DVD readers. Most modern DVD readers will read several formats such as the ones you have mentioned. However, you must make sure your DVD reader is compatible with the DVDs you want to use.

DVD+R and DVD-R are "write once" discs. DVD+RW and DVD-RW are rewriters, so you can write then erase, then write again.

Have a nice day :-)

DVD disk

check to see what format your computer burns on.[ex:dvd-r, dvd-rw,dvd-+r,dvd-+rw]different dvd players play certain dvd formats.the format for burning on your computer is probably different from the dvd players that aren't playing the disc.you also must finalize the burned disc.

Dell Cd/Dvd burner not working properly

I have a Dell XPS 400 that's about 3 years old. I have a DVD reader and a DVD-RW device. The former works - the latter takes forever to read discs (particularly DVD data discs.)

I'm starting to think some of the generic DVD-RW devices Dell uses in its computers are prone to early failure. The DVD-RW in my XPS-400 was called "HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N".

I'm going to try cleaning it, and then just swap it out for a better device.
