As a wild guess, are both of your new memory cards larger than 2GB?
The C653 works with MMC and SD cards. If you new cards are larger than 2GB then they're actually SDHC cards. While they fit into the slot they are electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to use cards 2GB and smaller.
What model Kodak EasyShare camera? Some of them only work with SD cards, not with SDHC cards. The same applies to kiosks. Make sure the slot is marked "SDHC' and not simply "SD".

Technically speaking, SD cards only go up to 2GB. (Actually, some very rare 4GB SD cards exist, but I doubt you have one of those.) Cards 4GB and up are SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards. Your camera was designed before the SDHC specs, and thus is not compatible with SDHC cards. This is not something that can be changed in firmware, since there is a hardware compatibility issue.
SDHC devices will accept SD cards, but the opposite does not hold true. SD devices will not accept SDHC cards.
