Whynter Portable Air Conditioner Model: ARC-14S. Problem: It sounded as if something fell inside the unit while it was operating (cooling) then it started to vibrate horribly. The vibration is only present when the unit is cooling (when the condenser is active?).

Hi,Whynter Portable Air Conditioner has many moving parts, and they all make noise and cause vibrations. Some of these parts are more likely to causing shaking and loud noises, and sometimes this signals a larger problem, something to watch and scrutinize. If serious enough, it calls for a repair.

Loose Parts

Loose parts cause the majority of shaking and vibration noises in your air conditioner. A few of the most common loose parts include the air compressor, the piston rods and even the fan or blower unit itself. These noises are clunking, clanking sounds that occur along with a vibrating action. The only method of repair is a complete compressor replacement, which is a repair only a certified air conditioner technician is qualified to make. The compressor is a fully sealed component, so individual parts in the compressor cannot be repaired.

Fan Blades

Fan blades cause noise, shaking and vibrations even when properly secured. If fan blades contact the exterior structure of the air conditioner due to a bent fan blade or broken and misaligned grate, a constant, repetitive noise and vibration results, which sounds like a ticking or banging from the interior of the air conditioner. Vibration in this case is limited but still present.

Mounting Brackets

When an air conditioner shakes, there is a problem with the mounting brackets. These brackets hold the air conditioner compressor steady as it operates. Normal vibrations and shaking would otherwise occur without these brackets. A loose mounting bracket causes the air conditioner to rock back and forth and creates a clanking sound. As the compressor starts up, this rocking and clanking sound begins, resulting in a very loud and fast vibration and noise. It also occurs when the unit shuts down.

Other Sounds and Vibrations

Sometimes air conditioners squeal, hiss, hum or screech. Each noise is often accompanied by a vibration. Humming sounds along with a vibration may indicate a bad capacitor, the electrical part responsible for starting the machine. Hissing sounds tend to indicate a pressure problem while screeching and squealing sounds are fairly common in window air conditioners and in central air conditioners. This sound is also a result of the compressor motor. It usually starts when the unit turns on and continues through its normal operating cycle. Vibrations always occur in the air conditioner due to moving parts and the compressor motor's operation.

In AC mode the cooler fan doesn't turn on and after a little while the warm air starts to blow instead of cold air. Any ideas

Sounds like a bad or stuck reversing valve. Typically r.vs. are energized in cooling, verify 24 volts to valve, if yes , bad valve

Control panel lights on whynter 12000 btu portable air conditioner .can't read some numbers

This is due to the detrioting condition of the display, sometimes an even lite press with fingers on the display may help. This happens due to loss of contacts inside due to poor quality of display or aging.

Fuse keeps blowing on my Whynter portable ac

Is your compressors motor capacitor replaceable? I know that on a split system, a dead capacitor (typically a 35uF) can cause increased current draw, to the point of blowing fuses, though I've never had to replace one on a portable unit. I usually replace them with a 30uF capacitor, roughly the size of a "200ml can of softdrink".

I have a Whynter ARC14SH. Is there a water reserve that need to be emptied?

Yes, occasionally the water collection tank needs to be drained. You will find the drain plug on the left rear of the unit, just above floor level.Since it's so close to the floor, draining it into a pan or bowl is not an option. Turn the unit OFF, unplug it and disconnect the exhaust hoses from the unit. Roll it to a floor drain or outdoors to drain it.

In case you have misplaced your Owner's Manual, I have included a link to it that you can download and print for future reference. http://www.whynter.com/Files/Upload/ProductManuals/ARC-14S_UserManual.pdf

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Brand new Whynter ARC 12 SD, just plugged in and red warning light about power button is blinking. Booklet says the light will blink when water reservoir needs to be emptied. But, it's brand new, no...

Check the positioning of the water bucket It may be slightly out of place and is not triggering the switch. If that doesn't solve the problem. Turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to OFF, unplug the unit for 12 - 15 minutes. Then plug it back in and turn the Master Switch ON/OFF Switch to ON. Set the controls and it may have reset itself.

If none of the above soled the problem contact the manufacture's Customer Support or Tech Service Dept.

Hope this helped you to solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.
