SOURCE: Can't load xp pro onto my IBM Lenovo M52 Desktop

Some more detail regarding this problem. I have downloaded and burnt the bios update iso image onto a CD. I have cleared the CMOS and selected the CD drive in th boot sequence. It has run the upgrade. When I try to boot to cd and reload Windows, it does not start the installation. I have tried with 2 sets of installation diks and it is the same. The hard drive is totally new and formated on my other computer. I have contacted IBM and they are sending recovery cd's. Does anyone know why I can't just load the windos OS on and does anyone know what these recovery cd's are?

SOURCE: IBM ThinkCentre A51 PC Desktop won't boot

This could still possibly be a bad power supply, even if the fans and drives spin up. If you have a spare try hooking it up.

the list of things that can cause this are:

bad power supply
bad ram
IDE error (optical or hard drive problem)
bad card (modem, video card etc.)
bad processor
bad board

The first thing i would look for in this case is blown capacitors. Those are the little things on the board that look like little soup cans, usually with silver tops. If the tops of any of them are bulging or have junk leaking out of them, you have a bad board. If you are handy with a soldering iron you can try to replace them. Not sure if radio shack still sells caps, but they are easy to find on line. I have about an %80 success rate fixing boards in this way.

If the PS change doesn't work, then try it with different sticks of RAM, if you have more than one, pulling one at a time until it starts or you've tried it with all the ram. If not ram, disconnect the ide cables from the board, these are the wide ones usually connected to the HD's and optical drives. If it still doesnt start then pull all the cards. If it doesnt start then, try swapping processor and if still no joy a new board.

SOURCE: how to remove ibm thinkcentre p4 3.0 motherboard

This is the link to the IBM ThinkCentre S50-8183, Hardware and Maintenance Manual,

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-51004

On this page scroll down to the heading -
Publication type: Publications,

and left-click on the blue - 74p2660.pdf

This is a PDF file download. May take up to 25 seconds before you see the first page, and additional time to full download it.

Suggest you let it download all the way before looking through it.
Otherwise you may break the download connection.

(The file should also be downloaded all the way, before saving it to your computer.

If you do not know how to save this PDF file to your computer, and would like to know how, please come back and state so in a Comment)

If you cannot download the Hardware and Maintenance Manual, please come back, and state so in a Comment.
(I had to try to download twice, as the connection dropped on me. Second time was a charm)

The following is from me:
1) Computer off, unplug the power to the computer.

2) BEFORE you reach inside the open computer case, TOUCH the metal frame of the computer case, to relieve Static electricity from your body.

Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside your computer.
(Even if this problem should relate to replacing a bad motherboard, you don't want to fry out the other hardware components. Processor, Ram Memory, Harddrive, and so on)

Should you get up, and walk away in the middle of working on your computer, when you come back touch the metal frame again.

Basic tips from me:
A) Opening the computer case.

Facing the front of the computer, there are two Cover Release Buttons. One on each side of the computer case, towards the front.

Press these release buttons in at the same time, rotate the cover up, and back.

The computer case is a 2 part type of case. The top opens like a clamshell, and is hinged on the back.
Should the cover not rotate it may be locked.
See if a lock is present on the back of the cover. If so remove it.

B) Looking at the inside of the Front of your computer, you'll note that the CD Drive, Floppy Drive, and Harddrive, are located inside a rectangular metal framework.

(Floppy Drive on the left, CD Drive on the right, Harddrive under the CD Drive)

This rectangular metal frame is the Drive Bay, and is hinged on the very front side of the computer case.
If you grab the side that is towards the middle, you can lift it up, and tilt it towards the Front.

The cables that you see coming from the motherboard to the CD/DVD Drive, Floppy Drive, and Harddrive, Do Not have to be disconnected from the drives.

THIS is in reference to the flat ribbon IDE cables, or round SATA cables.
These are Interface cables. Also known as a Signal cable.

( NOTE* IDE is also referred to as PATA. The term PATA was implemented to avoid confusion.

PATA is Parallel ATA
SATA is Serial ATA )

You can leave them connected to the drives themselves, just tie them up out of the way with a zip tie, or bread wrappers, and flop them to the outside of the computer case.

You Do have to remove the power cables to these three drives, to remove the motherboard.
They come from the Power Supply, and crossover the motherboard.

(Looking at the Hardware and Maintenance Manual, for the IBM ThinkCentre S50 series of Desktop PC's,
I see there are IDE and SATA connectors on the motherboard.

This means to me that you could have an IDE or a SATA harddrive. You MAY also have either an IDE or SATA optical drive. {CD/DVD Drive)

To avoid possible confusing information, I won't detail out how to remove both an IDE and SATA interface cable.
I'll let the Hardware and Maintenance Manual explain this.

IF, you are unable to download the manual, or if you need more detailed information than the manual provides, I will gladly give it.

We may have to post back, and forth, for the info you need. Just post your additional questions in a Comment)

BEFORE you disconnect any interface cable, that comes from the drives to the motherboard, I suggest you make drawings, and notes.

The Hardware and Maintenance Manual shows, and details information pretty well, but will never be as concise as any notes, or drawings you may additionally make.

Note which direction Each cable connector, plugs into the motherboard's connector, and where they go. Reference this in a drawing, and make a note.

Note where the power cables plug into the motherboard, and which power cables go where.

You'll also have to remove the Power Supply, in order to remove the motherboard.

There are two Fan connectors on the motherboard. It doesn't state if the Processor has a Fan, and doesn't look like it does. One of the Fan connectors, is to the computer case fan in the Front.

Observe, and make a note of which way the Front Panel cable connector plugs into the motherboard.
This may be critical.

The connector, (Header), on the motherboard may not have a locking device on it.

If it does, so does the Front Panel cable connector, and this automatically tells you how the connectors line up with each other.

Or there may be a Locating Lug, and a Notch.

If you take the computer all the way apart, don't worry I can tell you how to put it back together.

You do need to note which way that Front Panel cable plugs into the motherboard, though, before you remove it.

(The Front Panel, is the plastic piece on the front of your computer, where the Power On button, LED lights, and drive openings are)

Don't forget to plug in the 4-pin ATX power cable from the Power Supply to the motherboard. This is power for a Pentium 4 and above processor.

Looks like this,

Password

Have you looked to see if there is a jumper you can use to do a bios reset.
tip

How to Reset a BIOS Password.

Desktop Machines.

In desktop machines its very simple.
Just remove the BIOS Battery from the motherboard and place it back after 1mint.

Laptop Machines.

It is some what difficult in laptop machines. Because it is not an eassy job to remove BIOS battery from the mother board. So i'm just explaining some most commen methods.
1. Using a Backdoor BIOS Password

The backdoor password is a BIOS password that works, no matter what the user sets the BIOS password to. These passwords are typically used for testing and maintenance. Manufacturers typically change the backdoor BIOS passwords from time to time.

AMI Backdoor BIOS Passwords Reported AMI backdoor BIOS passwords include A.M.I., AAAMMMIII, AMI?SW , AMI_SW, BIOS, CONDO, HEWITT RAND, LKWPETER, MI, and PASSWORD.
Award Backdoor BIOS Passwords One reported Award backdoor BIOS password is eight spaces. Other reported Award backdoor BIOS passwords include 01322222, 589589, 589721, 595595, 598598 , ALFAROME, ALLY, ALLy, aLLY, aLLy, aPAf, award, AWARD PW, AWARD SW, AWARD?SW, AWARD_PW, AWARD_SW, AWKWARD, awkward, BIOSTAR, CONCAT, CONDO, Condo, condo, d8on, djonet, HLT, J256, J262, j262, j322, j332, J64, KDD, LKWPETER, Lkwpeter, PINT, pint, SER, SKY_FOX, SYXZ, syxz, TTPTHA, ZAAAADA, ZAAADA, ZBAAACA, and ZJAAADC.
Phoenix Backdoor BIOS Passwords Reported Phoenix BIOS backdoor passwords include BIOS, CMOS, phoenix, and PHOENIX.
Backdoor BIOS Passwords from Other Manufacturers Reported BIOS backdoor passwords for other manufacturers include:
Manufacturer BIOS Password VOBIS & IBM merlin Dell Dell Biostar Biostar Compaq Compaq Enox xo11nE Epox central Freetech Posterie IWill iwill Jetway spooml Packard Bell bell9 QDI QDI Siemens SKY_FOX SOYO SY_MB TMC BIGO Toshiba Toshiba Remember that what you see listed may not be the actual backdoor BIOS password, this BIOS password may simply have the same checksum as the real backdoor BIOS password. For Award BIOS, this checksum is stored at F000:EC60.

2. Resetting the BIOS Password using Software :

!BIOS will recover the BIOS password for most common BIOS versions, including IBM, American Megatrends Inc, Award and Phoenix.

CmosPwd will recover the BIOS password for the following BIOS versions:
  • ACER/IBM BIOS
  • AMI BIOS
  • AMI WinBIOS 2.5
  • Award 4.5x/4.6x/6.0
  • Compaq (1992)
  • Compaq (New version)
  • IBM (PS/2, Activa, Thinkpad)
  • Packard Bell
  • Phoenix 1.00.09.AC0 (1994), a486 1.03, 1.04, 1.10 A03, 4.05 rev 1.02.943, 4.06 rev 1.13.1107
  • Phoenix 4 release 6 (User)
  • Gateway Solo - Phoenix 4.0 release 6
  • Toshiba
  • Zenith AMI
3. Resetting the BIOS Password using Hardware :

If you cannot access the machine after if has been powered up, it is still possible to get past the BIOS password. The BIOS password is stored in CMOS memory that is maintained while the PC is powered off by a small battery, which is attached to the motherboard. If you remove this battery, all CMOS information (including the BIOS password) will be lost. You will need to re-enter the correct CMOS setup information to use the machine. The machines owner or user will most likely be alarmed when it is discovered that the BIOS password has been deleted.
On some motherboards, the battery is soldered to the motherboard, making it difficult to remove. If this is the case, you have another alternative. Somewhere on the motherboard you should find a jumper that will clear the BIOS password. If you have the motherboard documentation, you will know where that jumper is. If not, the jumper may be labeled on the motherboard. If you are not fortunate enough for either of these to be the case, you may be able to guess which jumper is the correct jumper. This jumper is usually standing alone near the battery. If you cannot locate this jumper, you might short both of the points where the battery connects to the motherboard.
If all else fails, you may have to clear the BIOS password by resetting the RTC (Real Time Clock) IC (Integrated Circuit) on your motherboard.
Many RTC's require an external battery. If your RTC is one of this type, you can clear the BIOS password just by unsocketing the RTC and reseating it.

4. Vendor Specific Solutions for Resetting the BIOS Password :
Resetting a Dell BIOS Password For information on how to recover a Dell BIOS password, please refer to How do I reset Dell BIOS password?
Resetting a Toshiba BIOS Password KeyDisk will reset the BIOS password on Toshiba laptops.

Some Toshiba's can be convinced to bypass the startup BIOS password if you hold down the <LEFT-SHIFT> key while booting the system.
Resetting an IBM ThinkPad BIOS Password For information on how to recover an IBM Thinkpad BIOS password, please refer to How do I reset an IBM ThinkPad BIOS password?
Resetting an IBM Aptiva BIOS Password Some IBM Aptiva's can be convinced to bypass the startup BIOS password if you press both mouse buttons repeatedly while booting the system.
Resetting an Acer BIOS Password For information on how to recover an Acer BIOS password, please refer to How do I reset an Acer BIOS password?

Hello, sorry my english is not good, i have a problem with my thinkcentre M52 . when i start the comp it writes enter system password.i press enter and it goes into the Bios, but i cant change anything into...

Someone has put a password on the BIOS - you must input it before entering the BIOS and the normal boot procedure. Because of the way IBM are build you can't reset the password by removing the battery, but only by performing a low level BIOS upgrade - which only a dealer can do. You will have to take it to one.
If you aren't the one that put that password and noone had access to it then the motherboard is dying - replace it before it's too late and all your data is lost.

I have an IBM ThinkCentre m51, no os installed and it has the wrong BIOS. It boots up but keyboard & mouse are dead so it seems like I cannot flash the bios, check it or install anything.

Try removing system battery on MB for about a minute and reinstall. Some units have a jumper pin for reset on MB also. If that does not help, your MB may be bad.

I bought a IBM thinkcentre from Circuit City but no cmos password

Best thing to do is take it bake and see if they set it for security reasons and have them unlock it,If they can't,It will need to be flashed since the bios password is not stored like it used to be.
