This morning at 4:00 a.m., I woke up with a loud bang. I got up to see what it was. I noticed the microwave had turned itself on and it read E:900. I went to open it and it was very very hot!! I unplugged it until this morning. Today, it seems to be working fine.We have had this microwave at least 5 yrs now. This is the first time it has happened. I was scared to death and woke my husband. Just last week, I had my twins firetruck wake me up in the middle of the night with it going off by itself. I have noticed other strange things before like this in the house. Is it common for this microwave or any microwave to be turning itself on? If so, what is the problem? (From now on, I will be unplugging it at night)
Time for a service call. Should not turn on by itself at any cause.
Circuit board is my guess. May be cheaper/easier to get new microwave. My first one lasted about 15 yrs--and the circuit board (touchpad) died. Bought new microwave oven.

There are two things that come to mind, the magnetron is starting to fail, or the strapping has come loose on the fan motor housing, unplug microwave oven and remove top, [several screws] carefully inspect the fan for any loose mounts and tighten.
It is possible, but you heard a similar bang earlier, from the description the magnetron is arcing on a occassion because it is failing, or there is bare metal exposed on the interior. I would recommend getting it checked out to make sure there is no safety hazard and have it resolved.
Thinkind about it, if you open the door, the light is on and you canset time etc but no start function. Check/replace the door interlock switches as I think there will be a faulty one or the small internal fuse has blown if it has two fuses. Hope this helps.
If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by
itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.
So until it is repaired,
please leave it unplugged or leave the door
open when it's not in use, and of course one should never leave a microwave unattended while cooking.
I have the exact same problem with my Kenmore Microwave model 721 that we bought in October of 2005. The Fan will just randomly turn itself on even when we are not cooking. It has been doing this for the last few months and is starting to become more frequent. There is no way to turn it off except to unplug it for several hours. Was there a recall for this defect ?
That is the magnetron faulty. The oven stops cooking, as the magnetron lose contact, when the magnetron restart working you hear that loud bang, and it restart radiating.
This problem normaly happens when the door is not closed properly for a long time and flashing and buzzing starts to give user a indication for same.
Allthough it is not risky as microwave oven has safty door switches wich does not allow oven to operate while door is open.
Take care and close the door properly before you leave kitchen..
Something has failed in the high voltage supply to the magnetron. There are no user serviceable parts inside, but there are INSTANTLY LETHAL voltages present. Scrap the oven & get a new one, they are generally not worth reparing.
