My son dropped the camera smack dab on the lens while it was on in camera mode. The lens was crooked and you could hear the gears turning when you tried to shut the camera on or off. Is this fixable by me or does it have to be sent off? I've had estimates from $50 to $150, at the $150 price I should probably buy a new cam. Any help from anyone? I have a Canon PowerShot A2300. It fell, with the lens open, about 3 feet onto a plastic crate. The lens was visibly crooked. I read about gently wiggling and pulling the lens into a fully extended position while turning the camera on an off. (I also tried zooming in and out). When I got the lens straight and fully extended I thought the problem was solved, but then the lens would not retract and the camera was making a lot of gear noise. While turning off the camera, I gently pushed the lens all the way in,and it seemed to click into place. Now it is working as well as before the fall. My biggest tip would be to suggest the wearing of rubber kitchen gloves so that you have a good grip on the lens and camera body.

Sounds like the lens got bent out of alignment. Call Canon at 1-800-828-4040. They are really good with their support with or without warranty. You can send it in for repair or ask for the Canon loyalty Program. You trade in your broken camera and they'll give you a newer model for an incredible price.

Thanks for the advice, this is my story to the T, down to the son dropping the camera. lol. I tried unsuccessfully to gently pull and push lens several times. It finally clicked and works now. Easy fix. Thx for posting so I was more confident it would work than just trying to grit my teeth and hope for the best.

You can buy a new A590 for under $110 these days, so the professional repair option may be out. Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:
