Camera dropped, lens won't retract or expand

My son dropped the camera smack dab on the lens while it was on in camera mode. The lens was crooked and you could hear the gears turning when you tried to shut the camera on or off. Is this fixable by me or does it have to be sent off? I've had estimates from $50 to $150, at the $150 price I should probably buy a new cam. Any help from anyone? Thanks I was playing around with my camera and dropped it on accident. Now the camera lens won't move! What do I do?

I have a Canon PowerShot A2300. It fell, with the lens open, about 3 feet onto a plastic crate. The lens was visibly crooked. I read about gently wiggling and pulling the lens into a fully extended position while turning the camera on an off. (I also tried zooming in and out). When I got the lens straight and fully extended I thought the problem was solved, but then the lens would not retract and the camera was making a lot of gear noise. While turning off the camera, I gently pushed the lens all the way in,and it seemed to click into place. Now it is working as well as before the fall. My biggest tip would be to suggest the wearing of rubber kitchen gloves so that you have a good grip on the lens and camera body.

Sounds like the lens got bent out of alignment. Call Canon at 1-800-828-4040. They are really good with their support with or without warranty. You can send it in for repair or ask for the Canon loyalty Program. You trade in your broken camera and they'll give you a newer model for an incredible price.

SOURCE: Camera dropped, lens won't retract or expand

Thanks for the advice, this is my story to the T, down to the son dropping the camera. lol. I tried unsuccessfully to gently pull and push lens several times. It finally clicked and works now. Easy fix. Thx for posting so I was more confident it would work than just trying to grit my teeth and hope for the best.

SOURCE: Camera dropped, lens won't retract or expand

You can buy a new A590 for under $110 these days, so the professional repair option may be out. Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

How do I fix error e45 for a kodak LS753

Error # 45 means the retractable lens is stuck, possibly caused by a drop or sand or other gunk that has jammed the gears. It will cost more to have repaired than the camera is worth, so you have nothing to loose by trying this. Hold the camera in your strong hand with the lens away from you and smack it hard into the palm of your other hand (if you can't take pain maybe use the heel of a shoe) pretty hard. It may take several tries. Best results - smack camera immediatly after turning off.

Dropped camera. lens open and crooked

Sorry to say you have broken the lens, replacement of the lens is the only practical repair and if you cant swap one yourself from a dead camera it would be beyond economical repair.
If you are adventurous you could buy a faulty one of ebay and swap the lens or if the faulty one has a broken screen or mode dial swap yours over to the faulty one..
there are a couple of "tricks" do getting this camera open drop me a line if you decide to proceed...

best of luck

Sony Cybershot dsc-p73 dropped

I also dropped this camera from waist high and the lens was stuck out and would not retract or let me do anything. I ended up having it sent to Sony to replace the lens and it cost me $200. I paid $300 for the camera to begin with but to me this was the BEST camera I'd ever had and was worth it. Before repairing it, I bought a new Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 since the original one I had dropped was no longer available. I was NOT pleased with the quality of the new camera at all and it was supposed to be better than the one I dropped. That's when I decided it was worth repairing the broken one and worth the cost.

Dropped camera and don't know if it is fixable

Generally speaking, there is nothing you can do to correct the problem other than to send the camera to the appropriate factory service center for correction of the error. Following the repair cost you should decide, whether it worth it.

Camera dropped, lens won't retract or expand

You sound as if you don't want to waste money on this camera. You could try to gently pull the lens straight. If it's leaning to the right then pull the lens to the left. Don't use brute force but it's possible to realign the lens this way. If it works you'll hear a click and the lens will look straight. Switch on and see if it retracts. I'd only use this as a last resort because you can cause additional damage if it's overdone. But believe me I've seen it done and I've done it myself with about a 40% win rate. bmw
