Maryann, your uinit may not need to be repaired. As, there are 5 basic, yet solvable reason for what you described. Please pay particular attention to numbers 1 & 2.

1. The humidity extraction level is set to HIGH. Lower it to 32-35%. If you have an analog unit
set the humidity extraction level on Maximum.

2. Air intake filter is dirty or clogged. Turn unit OFF, & Unplug the
Unit, before removing to inspect & clean it, if necessary. If washed,
allow filter to completely dry before reinstalling. DO NOT operate
the unit without the filter.

3. Obstructed air flow. Maintain a minimum of 12 to 18" of clear air
space around the entire unit.

4. Cooling coils are dirty and need to be cleaned. Use warm water & dish washing liquid to
clean the coils. Rinse and wipe dry. Apply a light coating of WD40 to the coils.

5. Ambient air temperature at floor level is between 40 - 60 degrees.
dehumidifiers do not work well between those temperatures
(Unless, you have a Low Temp Unit). This applies mainly to
where the air temperature at floor level is colder than at shoulder level
in basement applications. Raising the unit up off the floor,
onto a sturdy table, counter top, etc, that can handle the weight
of the unit, plus a full tank of water, will usually resolve this
problem.

If none of the above solves the problem, it may be a case of the compressor needs to be recharged with refrigerant gas or that the humidity condenser sensor has failed. These things usually occur in units that are 5 years old or older. It's rare in a unit younger than that. But, it can happen.

I really hope the above information will help you to troubleshoot & solve the problem without having to make repairs. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Our dehumidifier is about 2 years old. It turns on and sounds fine, but it no longer condenses any moisture from the air. Does the refridgerant need rechargeing?

Ice forms on the coils. Would wet clothing hung in the area contribute to this problem? The temperature of the area is in the high 50's - 60's.

Yes. Wet clothing would act to put Humidity in the air. think of the air as a sponge the more you heat the air the more the air will take moisture out of its surrondings. The more you cool the air the less moisture it can hold.
a Dehumidifier is a reverse refrigrator.. Air is forced over cool coils and the moisture forms and freezes on the coils (ice). The unit turns off and the coil and ice takes heat up from the surrounding area (makes room colder;Clothing takes longer to dry; The temperature in that room should be were people reside 70-80 degrees). the ice melts and water drips into a holding container which you dump periodically. Solution: 1. remove wet clothing or 2. raise temperature in room. 3. put a space heater in that room instead of Dehumidifier

Our dehumidifier is no longer pulling moisture out of the air. I took the back off and the fan is still running. So motor or condenser? And is it worth fixing? The machine is approximately 6 years old.

Start up instruction for dehumidifier

A dehumidifier does not need water in the tank.It takes humidity out of the air and the moisture goes into the bucket. A humidifier has to have water in the tank.Note ,a humidifier puts moisture in the air, and a dehumidifier takes the moisture takes moisture out of the air.

What could be wrong with my dehumidifier it runs but doesn't draw moisture anymore

does the air feel humid? could be the humidity level dropped and there isn't any moisture in the air. the air passing over the evaporator coil needs to be laden with moisture for the dehumidifier to work.

My dehumidifier fan runs but is not taking any moisture out of the air. It is not very old. Last year it worked great.

More than likely you have developed a refrigerant leak. The cost of a diagnosis alone from a technician is almost at the price of a new one. Leak test and repairs will put you over the cost of new.

Friedrich dehumidifier

Most dehumidifiers have a "Frost Guard" mounted on the condensor coil. If frost accumulates on the condensor coil the frost guard turns the compressor off until the frost melts, then comes back on again. For the dehumidifier to work properly, the surrounding (ambient), temperature must be higher than 65 degress. This temperature allows the moisture in the air to condense on the coils and drip into the reservoir without freezing up on the condensor coil. Also, if the humidity is too low, (below 45%), the same condition will occur. So it will help to keep the parameters in mind when you have this issue.

Thank you for your allowing me to advise you on this issue.
