I
just bought this laptop aspire 5100 and the dvd/cd rom is not detected
by the bios , it has power it can be closed and open but it cannot be
seen in bios or windows vista , i purchased a brand new dvd/cd drive
still not detected by the bios or windows , what can i do is my
motherboard bad or ...please hel
My Aspire 5100 not only looses the cdrom but also the hard drive! It sometimes beeps 3 times.. I'd go into set-up (BIOS) and niether the hard drive or dvd would be listed.. As a last resort, I flashed the motherboard bios with the latest version from Acer and so far the problem hasn't returned. I also set the laptop to hibernate after 30 minutes of non use when both on battery or on ac power. Reason? My problem always started when I left my laptop unattended for some time. When I'd return, the computer would be off.. not asleep or hibernating, but off - even though it was set to never turn off in the power settings in windows. When I'd turn it back on, that is when the hard drive and dvd rom would vanish in the BIOS. So as an added precaution, I set the laptop to always hibernate after 30 minutes.. Like I say, so far so good..
I posted a fix for this already. It may work for some of you, those who are not having hard drive problems as well. http://www.fixya.com/support/t1472132-acer_dvd_rom
Resolve the problem,
- Go to Start
- Type "Device Manager" on the Start Search (Click run and type "Device Manager" for Windows XP users)
- Right-click on the DVD/CD-Rom drives
- And clicked "Scan for hardware changes"
- DONE
hope it resolve your problem
Defective solder connections on m/b,need to resolder these connections if skilled .
took carwe of it!!!
Actually, if you do what henma said it will pick it back up until restart. I believe it may be an issue with the motherboard and vista. Can't explain it, and i'm not going to try but it worked fine for me just a moment ago after a nice hard slam shut, lol. Try it out, if it doesn't work atleast now you know it's broken.
Open Cmd in Administrative mode
reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001
You can copy paste the command from above.
Reboot your computer.
If it didn't worked, reboot and do it again.
I have the same problem wiress also not working. Most likely pci bridge on the board crapped out.

aspire 5100 does not detect dvd drive
Along with not reading the CD/DVD drive sometimes during boting up it beeps three times and displays errors with something in Bus 6 and some device and function. I have been looking to narrow it down to just one thing before I take it in but since it looks to be affecting my CD/DVD, start up, and WIFI I'm pretty sure it is the motherboard. Anybody figure this out yet?
I Have Same Problem My Cd Drive Gets Power But Its Not Detected In Bios Or In Windows I Was Told To Delete Upper And Lower Filters And I Did It Worked For Like 4 Hours Then Went Blank Again And I Have No Upper And Lower Filters To Delete And The Device Manager Thing I Tried That And Still Nothing Any More Ideas? My Mother Board Is Good I Have Tried Everything And I Wish I Had Installed XP When It Was Working Vista Sucks
Me and hundreds of others have this problem... Well done Acer!
Please help! S.O.S!!
same
I have the same problem with my ACER Aspire 5100 (does not recognize the DVD/CD reader). The thing is, it does not even appear in the Device Manager for me to select DVD/CD-Rom.
I tried to re-install vista from a USB flash (since it won't read my $%^#%^$ DVD reader) but it doesn't work, even if a set the laptop to try booting from there first.
Am I stuck with this crappy scenario for good?
i have had this problem twice first i took it to circuit city and they replaced my hard drve and cd/dvd drive then it worked for about 2 months now it has gone out again and unfortunately circuit city no longer exists in ga. I have since loaded xp professional on and i still have no cd drive also my wireless internet doesnt work....
Same issue - just replaced the DVD drive and still nothing showing in the BIOS. Drive is receiving power, but not recognized by anything!
