Hello,
If your sound is not working after installing then it means your sound driver is not installed properly.
So you need to either re-install XP or download the drivers.
Anyways i will give sound card driver to be downloaded. If you re-install XP again then make sure that your speaker is ON !
Here is the download link below. After installing kindly restart.

I hope it helps.

This is fairly normal with fresh installations of Windows XP especially if your computer utilizes sound card and other components that Windows does not have "native" drivers for. You will need to install chipset & audio drivers directly from your computer/motherboard's drivers disc (in some cases, network and video drivers will also have to be re-installed, but they should also be in that disc).
If you no longer have that disc, then you'll have to find out what make and model your computer/motherboard is so you can download the drivers directly from the manufacturer's website. These drivers and their corresponding applications are free to download.
Hopefully you still have the disc so you would not have to locate the brand and model, etc.

My compaq presario v3700 windows xp laptop audio is not working.

I see that your Laptop was not pre-installed with XP, it was with Vista. Installing XP on it, will be a downgrade which is not recommended by them (HP). In HP Laptops, there is always trouble making the device and drivers work with retail version OS.

Anyways, I got the audio driver for XP, you can give it a try....

The Audio is a High definition Audio and we can not install the Audio driver ditectly without installing the UAA (Universal Audio Architecture) driver in Windows XP. So, first install UAA driver (restart) then install Audio driver (restart).

UAA driver:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33566.exe

Audio driver:

Audio & video is not working

You downgrade from Vista to XP right?

Installing your audio drivers on XP:- ***important
You have to install the "Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (sp33867)" first, before intalling the audio drivers Conexant CX20549-12 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows XP (sp41836.exe).

If you reverse the procedure your audio won't work.

Hope it helps.

You have not install the drivers correctly.

Since your model audio is HD, you have to install the XP update first ie "Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) Bus Driver for High Definition Audio (sp33867)", before installing the device sound drivers "Conexant CX20549-12 Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows XP".

You can download the dtivers HERE

Intel Desktop Board D945GCNL HD Audio Controller 5605 Windows Vista(32/64)/XP(32/64)/2000
Installs the Realtek audio driver version 5605 for Intel® Desktop Boards.

IMPORTANT: Audio drivers may fail to install in Windows* XP 64-Bit Edition. Symptoms may include error messages, such as "Error in installation" or "Unknown error". Microsoft's Update for Windows XP x64 Edition (KB901105) fixes this issue. After installing this update, the audio drivers for Windows XP 64-Bit Edition will successfully install.
