Belkin N Modem Router If main PC which is ethernet wired to the modem router is swtiched off, laptops cannot access the internet. Does this mean that the PC to which the modem router is connected has to be switched on to ensure internet access for other computers to access through wireless connection? I understood that, once set up, a modem router would work even if disconnected from any ethernet connection.

It will as long as the modem/router is connected to a phone line, instead of the pc, the only cable connected to the pc should be a ethernet cable; or you have the pc networking set that it connects via another pc instead of through a gateway, re run the wireless network wizard.

I bought a Belkin 'Play' router to provide wireless internet connectivity from my CLEAR modem. I can't get the router to speedtest at half the speed as being directly connected (via ethernet cable) to the...

Use an Ethernet cable from the CLEAR modem into the WAN (or 'Internet') port on the Belkin.
Take a close look at the 8 coloured wires at each end of the Ethernet cable.
The 8 wires must be coloured in the _same_ order at both ends.

Be sure that you have a 'CAT-5' or 'CAT-5E' cable, not a 'CAT-3' cable, which is much slower, over long distances.

Use another Ethernet cable from one of the (three? four?) 'LAN' ports on the Belkin to the network-port on your computer. Again, check that you have a "straight-through" cable, not a "cross-over" cable.

Turn the CLEAR modem off.
Turn the Belkin off.
Turn your computer off.

Turn the CLEAR modem on, and wait until its lamps settle-down to a consistent pattern.

Turn the Belkin on, and wait until its lamps settle-down to a consistent pattern.

Turn your computer on, and let it boot.

You now should have Internet access.

Note that the router "dynamically" shares the Internet connection.
If there are 4 'LAN' ports, then each of the LAN ports gets as much speed as it needs;
you do not have a 25/25/25/25 split, unlike cutting-up an apple-pie to feed 4 people.

Run a "speed-test" on your computer, and you should be getting as much speed as you are paying for. Having the Belkin in the "middle" of your network should *NOT* slow-down the speed-test at all.

Belkin router can't connect to internet

This is part solution, part clarification request: When you say that you installed the setup software on your laptop, setup software for which: the modem, or the belkin router? Also what type of internet service do you have - Cable? DSL? If you are not sure, list your ISP. What operating systems do you have on your laptop and your main computer?

You say that you connected the modem to your main computer - I am assuming that you mean that you connected your modem with a network or ethernet cable (the one with a connector that looks similar to but larger than a telephone's connector) to your computer's ethernet card, or NIC, port. Is anything connected by ethernet cable to the Belkin router? If you have not connected the modem directly to the router, it will not connect to the internet, and anything connecting to the Belkin router will not be able to access the internet as well.

Try this: disconnected the power from your modem, then disconnect power from your router, and disconnect any ethernet cables from computer & modem, or computer and router. Connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the Belkin Router. (Ensure that you have plugged in the ethernet cable on the router into a port that is either set aside from others, or indicates "Internet", WAN, or something similar - it should be marked either with a different color, labled, or both). Now power on your modem. Wait until you see a steady "ready" light, green ethernet light, or the light usually lit for that model indicating it has completed its bootup tests and the internet connection is ready.
Next, ensure the ethernet cable is connected from the modem to correct WAN or "internet" port on the Belkin Router, then power up the router. Once the router boots up completely, plug in a cable from your computer's (main computer) NIC or ethernet card or port, to a port on the Belkin Router (there should be more than one port available, generally numbered "1, 2, 3" and so on - in a group, seperate from the WAN or internet port). Once you are sure you have the cable plugged into one of the correct ports, and if you have windows, restart your main computer.

Now on your main computer, check to see if you have an internet connection. If you do, you can now resume running the router's software setup on your laptop, which sounds as though it was walking you thru the setup process to connect you via wireless connection to the internet. Report back if you have any success, or if you have any further problems, and best of luck! Hope that info helps

Belkin Wireless N router/Embarq 660 modem/No internet

Make sure your physical connection is correct. From the modem, the ethernet cable should plugged in to the Internet/WAN port of the router. And your computer to port 1. Access the setup page of the router again and Enable the MAC Address Clone setting. Clone the MAC Address of your PC there then power cycle the router and modem. You should be all set.

Connecting Laptop wireless and Desktop wired to the router

Do you need to see the desktop or just share folders from each other? If the latter then you need to do the following:

Use Windows Explorer and select a folder you want to share. Right click and select sharing and security.

On the sharing tab click on Share this folder. Enter a share name ( I like to enter the PC name _folder name; Rick1_Downloads)

Click on Permissions. If your ok with everyone using the PC's and Laptops having access then highlight Everyone and click on Full Control.

Do this on each PC and Laptop.

That should be it or darned near close.

My laptop has vista installed via usb from virgin cable modem.what must i do to install a belkin wireless g mimo router using ethernet connection?

Huh? You installed Vista through your Virgin Cable Modem? What on earth does that mean?

Are you trying to ask "How do I install my Belkin Wireless G Router?"

If that is the actual question, here is the answer:

1) Unplug your cable modem from your computer.
2) Plug the cable modem into the router using a Ethernet Cable.
3) Plug the router into the computer using another Ethernet Cable.
4) Plug in the power supply for the cable modem and then the router.

(If your cable modem is ONLY USB, and doesn't have a spot to plug in a Ethernet Cable, you'll have to call Virgin and replace the modem with a model that does)

Once everything is up and running, you should be on the internet as soon as the computer starts.

(You may want to log into the router and disable the "Wireless" settings if you aren't using them to stop others from gaining entry to your network)

Wireless router to modem problems

Since it says network cable unplugged on the computer when wired to the router, you need to check these first:

â Make sure that the Ethernet cable is connected from the modem to the router’s Internet (WAN) port and the computer to the numbered port of the router. The computer should used to be connecting to the Ethernet port of the modem, if not; you should contact your ISP first.
â Make sure that the Ethernet adapter/LAN card on your computer is working properly. You can check that on the device manager of your computer.
â If those are all working fine that would mean the router is not yet configured for Internet access or we can say that the settings for the provider are not synchronized with the router.

To configure the router, you can do these general steps:

1. Connect the computer to the numbered port of the router and the modem to the router’s Internet (WAN) port.
2. Turn off the computer, router and modem.
3. Turn on the modem first, wait for the lights to stabilize then turn on the router. As soon as the lights are stabilized, you can turn on the computer and check for internet connection.

However, if the Internet connection still does not work. That means there are additional settings needed to be done. You can message me about the name of your ISP and I will provide you the specific steps you need.
