I am a college student and juss got the dell axim x5... we have wireless internet at my school so how do i access the internet while im on campus or anywhere else that has wireless internet.. do i buy a flash card or network card of sum sort?... what kinda do i buy?.. do i have to buy a subscription to sumthing???..
For x5, you will need either cf wifi card or sd wifi card. If wifi network hotspot is free and internet access is allowed (check with your college's network administrator for information), all you need is be in the range, turn the wifi on and connect to it (there maybe several security settings you have to do on the axim and these can also be obtained from network admin). For paid hotspot, you will be redirected to enter username and password when you ty to access internet.

scan around with the stumbler it should detect the network, if its set to the wrong band, G only for example it wont be detected set the router to mixed B / G mode.
The issue you have is that the Axim does not have any built in connectivity for networking. In order for the Bluetooth to connect you, you would have to first pair the Axim to a Bluetooth enabled phone that can support Internet connections. Bluetooth on its own can't connect to the Internet, it is a protocol to link devices together. The easier way would be to buy a wireless 802.11 compact flash card that will support PocketPC and then use a wireless access point to connect to the Internet.
For exact to the point instructions we need specifics about what you want to do and with what but here goes...
Can't really help with the connect to the internet without more info than you provided. You need a wireless card, access to a wireless system and the drivers for the card. Even then it is not always consistant.
First I'm assuming you know that you need and have installed Activesync on the computer.
To transfer files to the Axim you simply drop them in the mobile my documents folder that is installed on the desktop when sync files is selected in Activesync. If you don't have it, open Activesync and select" options", check the "files" box. A desktop icon will be added.
If you mean install program files... most of the time you install on the desktop and it adds files to the x5 when you sync.
Sometimes you may need to transfer CAB files to the x5. In that case you will drag and drop the file on your x5 in my computer or on the icon on the desktop just like any other file move to another location
If your trying to sync with the wireless card, I am not familier with the method but in order to get the card to work it needs drivers that must be installed from the computer and through Activesync by wired connection first
The X5 does NOT have wireless built in. You must add a wireless card (compactflash or SD) They tend to be finicky so do a little research for one that works well with the X5 first before buying.
When using wireless lan with PPC, there are some experience shere with you.
1. You must do an "Reset" after the first time of installing wireless driver into your DELL AXIM. Otherwise, the driver would not work.
2. Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 only can allow one source to access the internet. It can't access internet via the USB and wireless at the same time. Thus, it is more batter way to leave your AXIM alone instead of insert on cradle when you try to access internet via wireless lan.
3. Some of the wireless's CE driver are based on StrongArm, 206MHz, not PXA250, 400MHz. It will got problem when the wireless try to initiate the link between base station and PPC. Try the following step:
(i) Make sure you have been install the wireless driver.
(ii) Remove your wireless from CF slot.
(iii) start->setting->power->processor
select "PowerSave" mode and apply it.
(iv) Plug wireless into CF slot
(v) If you can get an dynamic IP or access internet, you can repet step 3, but select "Auto" mode.
Hoping these information can solve your problem.
To copy word documents, simply connect your device to your computer, click "Explorer" in ActiveSync, and then transfer the word document from your desktop to your Pocket PC. ActiveSync will do the conversion from Word to Pocket Word for you.
As for wireless internet service, you need a wireless Compact Flash card and data service. Sprint is one of the few companies that offers this, and there is also the Pocket Spider from Enfora which can connect on some wireless networks.
I can connect my Axim X5 to the Internet using my mobile phone via infrared without a problem. You need to create a new dial-up connection using "Generic Infrared" modem in the setup. The number to be dialled is a function of your mobile phone. On my Nokia 6230i the "number" is *99# for creating a GPRS connection. Your mobile phone has to be correctly set up for Internet access and obviously you have to have a data plan.
