Where is the broken needle stuck? The broken upper part should just come out like a regular needle (via the needle-screw). If the broken tip is stuck, try removing the bobbin case from the machine. When that is released, everything under the needleplate should be accessible.
If the needle is hitting, most likely your machine has been knocked out of time (which frequently occurs when the needle strikes something it shouldn't). Search for sewing machine timing or take it for service.
If it is stuck in the bobbin mechanism, you can remove the bobbin case to extract it. You probably should find and remove the broken piece because it can cause severe damage to your machine. I've actually picked my machine up and shook it to find the broken needle. Sometimes it drops straight through and is actually setting under the machine.
best suggestion try inserting new needle. cotton up the top suggests needle problem or incorrect top thread tension, this would effect the feed dog. Because thread is black and most recent use was with pink, the problem thread was already there perhaps in cavity above bobbin but below throat plate. I have had this happen and nothing will move, untill needle released. The bobbin holder tension may also need adjusting after the knots of black cotton are removed.
I suggest to change the needle anyway, the tip of the needle could be damaged clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint & threads rethread the machine top & bobbin
