The camera (Powershot S5 IS) suddenly quit working. It will not power on (tried two sets of fresh batteries). Am I overlooking something very simple? Is it related to the small button battery that protects the memory?

Things to check first for a camera that won't turn on are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.

I turned on powershot then opened the battery

If you install fresh batteries, close the battery door the lens should retract. If it did not, make sure the batteries installed are properly. And don't do that again you will lose all pictures on the card and may ruin the card permenently.

"change the batteries" allert whenever i operate my camera

Ok the SxIS series has another battery which is used for the date and other important data like settings and stuff. This is usually a small battery like a CR1002 the flat ones to be exact. Try changing that one and see how it goes.

Thanks for the feedback.
