I notive that this is an old post, but I found it recently when experiencing the same problem. So just in case others are still coming across this problem what worked for me is to run a number of print head cleaning in a row... five or so at first... then do a nozzle check... keep repeating this process and hopefully like me you'll eventually see some black lines start to appear on the nozzle check print out. Keep going until all lines are on the print out! I also use non-epson ink... I haven't had this problems with the other colours though, having said that they are not used as much as the black!

Hope this helps someone!

Just to add... you may have to exercise some patience with this one... but perservere, it'll work...eventually!! But be warned that this process will literally drink ink, especially if the printing head is really blocked!!!

You need to take it a couple steps further after your test print. Sounds like your print heads need cleaning or your cartridge may need aligning. It's best to do this each time you install a new cartridge. get more information and help from here .Hope this helps you.

SOURCE: my Epson Stylus R300 will not print black

After changing (genuine) cartridges and performed print-head cleaning from the computer at least 3 times consecutively, the printer needs servicing / replacement (if warranty permits).

Known fact (any printer make) : Having your printer repaired costs more then having a new one.

Epson Requires Genuine Epson Cartridges. !!!!!!!!

Hello, In Purchasing Epson's CX 5400, CX4600, & CX7400 and more, I found out that Epson does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. That sounds like your problem. Also in Purchasing the Brother's . Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, Blue Brown, etc.
These printers have a chip, that will detect if it is Generic or Genunie. When using Generic Cartridges, it will print lines thru the words, stripes across the picture and also do a mix match with the colors.

That's what these Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, but you have to fill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY.

So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for these PRINTERS. Some people say some models work fine compatible, but not mine.......

I had to replace the printer, but Epson, Lexmark & Brothers are always on sale. My Brother & Epson cost me $50.00 with Rebate. Don’t waste too much ink in cleaning it.

This is the only advice I can give you. If you find this helpful, pls rate me.

Thanks and Good Luck :0)

My Epson Stylus R300 will not print black

The problem is either with the black cartridge or with black printheads.

First test a new black cartridge, possibly original, to ensure it is not the cartridge.
Perform a print head cleaning procedure using the printer tools in Winsdows, do this a couple of times.
If it did not work you will need to replace the print head or to take the printer to a repair shop.

Hi when i print lines appear in my printout - i have ran the maintenance checks and nozzle check utility seems fine although the black looks a bit fuzzy - do you know how to resolve this problem please?...

If you haven't done so, run the alignment setup again. If that doesn't work, put in new cartridges and see if there are still lines in your printout. This will check if it's a printer issue or cartridge issue. Here's a PDF from epson on how to run the alignment setup. See page 11. http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/r300__/r300__pg.pdf

How to install new cartridge

Make sure the printer is on and not printing. Have a new cartridge handy, as this installation should be done in one session.

Note if the "cartridge is low" or the "cartridge is empty" light is activated on the printer and follow the specific instructions carefully in the document below for each situation.

See "Removing and Installing Ink Cartridges" in the following document:

The blue colour has run out but the black is fresh and it won't let me print a black text document-is it possible with out having to go and get a blue cartridge?

The Epson DX4850 will print black only. You can find a check box in the settings to Print Black only in the advanced options.

This works fine for me when all my colours are empty.

Ink Cartridge

Some of Epson's cartridges went bad that way. It may be a bad cartridge. Get a new one, pull that one out and see what happens. If it works, call Epson for a refund. They had a class action suit for that type of thing, they lost and paid off. I would think they will help you right away.
