If the movies are DVD (like ps2 games) It could be that the laser for your PS3 has issues-
Try using a lint-free lens cloth to clean the laser lens- if that does not work, you may need to contact Sony for an RMA to get your PS3 repaired

What happens you put a ps3 disc in the drive? Does it not register at all? Does it read BLUERAY movies because if so it should read games as well.

sounds like a dead Laser they are a dual laser will read DVDs n CDs but wont read Blueray movies or PS3 games

hold the power button down when it is red till you hear the quick beeps then select the file restore this is a diagnostics menu..remember you have to hold the power button down till you see a menu that youve probably never seen

The reason why ur ps3 40gb wont run ps2 games is because its only a 40gb. If u had a 80gb ps3 then u could play ps2 games.

Try reseting the ps3 or try to update the firmware version to the latest, the problem may be fixed in an update. If that dosn't help call the sony peoplethey could help in this problem.

Send it to Sony for warranty replacement

Your PS2 is definitely broken. Either send it in to Sony to be repaired or buy a new PS3. Bummer. Sorry to hear about this.
