I'm having a problem with my thermostat reading much higher than set temperature. The apartment manager is blaming the heat outside, but I've been here 3 years and this is the first time I've had the problem. I can even set it to 77dF and it won't pick it up, it will jump up to 79 or 80, and this is hours after the sun goes down even. Do I just need to replace the thermostat? The air is cooling, but never cutting off due to this problem.

question: do you have a multiple thermostat setup in 1 zone? If so check what settings are for your heat on each thermostat. Make sure that the heat is not set higher than the room's temperature.
check what settings are for your cooling on each thermostat. Make sure that the cooling is set accordingly.

if you have multiple thermostats setup in 1 zone. the thermostat with the lowest temperature will reign supreme. The heat setting on that thermostat will be what's causing the buzz on the heater.

optionally, hard reset your thermostat as a precaution. Here's how to do so: there are two types of thermostats i know of programmable and non-programmable.

disable auto & enable manual; however do NOT change settings or power-off t-stat. Remove battery and power down the thermostat until you see nothing on the thermostat monitor; power OFF the switch connected to your t-stat. Remove battery and reinsert inverted, if needed, press whatever button that your heart desires to make sure that nothing is absolutely drawing into that mode, button, etc; wait (5sec-1min); remove batters; wait 1min; then, reinsert batteries in its correct position; if you have a programmable thermostat; do the same with the hit 'reset filter' held down observe if the roomTemp reading has changed.

May I suggest to keep an extra thermometer around to determine if temperature reading accurately?

If reset requires a reprogramming to your t-stat, do whatever required to set your desired setting.

Why doesn't my heating and cooling system come on when i start the car?

If this is a new problem, a temperature sensor may have gone bad. But if this is a new car to you, some Climate Control cars work this way.

Some will allow for Vent or Panel just to get air circulating, but the A/C should come on when you select A/C unless the outside temperature is too low.

For heater functions, the engine must warm up enough to provide heat. The Climate Control models will not turn on until it compares your temperature settings with how hot the engine water temperature is to provide this heat for you.

Now you may need to check the Antifreeze levels and check the temperature of the Radiator water to know if the Thermostat is working properly.

section 4 includes temperature setpoints by model number.
On-line manual can be word-searched for fine details that might be missed by a visual read.

Check that air vents are open to control, so the unit can read correct temperature.
Change temperature Display selector for F or C.
Make sure wires are connected to correct terminals to match your voltage.
15 amp max rating indicates #12 gauge wire for 120Volts. Recommend that thermostat control a contactor instead of direct-wire to heat coils.

Limit thermostat , heres how you check thermostats Set your multimeter to the R X 1 setting. Take each of your meter's probes and touch one to each terminal. You are testing for continuity, and you should receive a reading of either zero or infinity. At room temperature, testing the thermostat should produce a reading of zero. But if a thermostat is tested when it is heated to its limit, a reading of infinity should be produced. I strongly recommend that you test your thermostat at room temperature.

Maytag electric dryer shuts off mid- cycle. I've checked the lint screen and dryer vent to the outside. They're fine. The heat works. Just shuts off after 10 minutes or so.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you have done but, make sure your compresor(outside is running and, that you don't have the thermostat set to "fan". You want the display to show "cool" and then adjust your temp. It sounds like you have the system set to fan and not cool. Provide me with a model number and I will see about getting you a manual.

Is the car actually heating up?Does the radiator boil?Have you looked at the temperature sending unit giving a bad temp.reading.?The thermostat needs looking at and also the head gasket.Hope this helps

Where do I set thermostat when temp is 10 degrees outside?

Setting a thermostat has nothing to do with outdoor temperature, but more to do with what is a comfortable setting for you and your utility bill.

A common misconception associated with thermostats is that a furnace works harder than normal to warm the space back to a comfortable temperature after the thermostat has been set back, resulting in little or no savings. This misconception has been dispelled by years of research and numerous studies. The fuel required to reheat a building to a comfortable temperature is roughly equal to the fuel saved as the building drops to the lower temperature. You save fuel between the time that the temperature stabilizes at the lower level and the next time heat is needed. So, the longer your house remains at the lower temperature, the more energy you save.

Another misconception is that the higher you raise a thermostat, the more heat the furnace will put out, or that the house will warm up faster if the thermostat is raised higher. Furnaces put out the same amount of heat no matter how high the thermostat is set; the variable is how long it must stay on to reach the set temperature.

In the winter, significant savings can be obtained by manually or automatically reducing your thermostat's temperature setting for as little as four hours per day. These savings can be attributed to a building's heat loss in the winter, which depends greatly on the difference between the inside and outside temperatures. For example, if you set the temperature back on your thermostat for an entire night, your energy savings will be substantial. By turning your thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees for 8 hours, you can save about 5 to 15 percent a year on your heating bill -- a savings of as much as 1 percent for each degree if the setback period is eight hours long.

Indoor temp is 5 degrees colder than display reads on digital thermostat

Where are you measuring the indoor temperature?
To compare it to the thermostat temperature you have to measure both temperatures at thermostat.
The thermostat will only control the temperature at the thermostat, not any where else in the room.
The room temperature depending on insulation in walls and ceiling and distance from outside wall and outside temperature, can be as high as 10° difference from outside wall to inside wall of house.
The lower the outside temperature, the greater the room difference in heating. The higher the outside temperature the greater the room difference in cooling.
