Some mowers have a mowing reverse safety switch. That safety will kill the mower if you try to reverse with the deck engaged. Some mowers even have an override button that has to be held while backing up. As for the battery thing, no matter how much you charge a bad battery you will not get it to start a mower if it has a bad cell or two. I would use a multimeter to check battery voltage, but the end result would still be the same, replace the battery.
I hope this gets you going again.
I'm having the same problem (minus the reverse issue)... cut-off on me when I got off to move something-even though blades were disengaged & parking brake was on?- hasn't started since. I even bought a new battery...nothing. I thought maybe it was the seat switch; did the override & still nothing. I've hit the starter with a hammer while cranking>>> still nothing. What else can I try????
Well, this one requires a little bit of troubleshooting. I say we split your electical system, mentally. Do you have access to an electrical multimeter, and know how to use it. If you can get one but do not know how to use it, I can direct you. A cheap digital multimeter at sears is not very expensive, and a good tool to be familiar with and have at available. You can click on my ID in blue and ask a question direct in its own conversation. I think that will get me and we can step through this problem in a dedicated conversation. For example if the person that posted the original problem on this thread starts writing then we could have confusion. I look forward to helping you step through your problem.
