Tip & How-To about Microsoft Windows XP Professional

Windows Defender 0x800106ba Service Error on Automatic Startup

Some times even when the Windows Defender service is set to automatic you still might see the Error below and even when you have tried this site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931849 which tells you to remove the program and then use the windows installer cleanup utility form HERE and start again you still get the same error

This is a method is bit drastic I suggest that first you update manually the definitions from HERE then download my Windows Defender FIX from my Public SKYDRIVE then restart you PC it should now fix the above error it will re-register all the DLLs that are needed to allow the error to go

how do i fix error ox800106ba

Hi Anon,
The 0x800106ba error may occur after Windows Defender is updated due to the computer's inability to update the Windows Defender firewall. It may not have applicable permissions needed for the update, or it may not have the files necessary for updating itself.

The Fix

Set Windows Defender to Automatic - You can set the Windows Defender service to Automatic, Disabled or Manual. Setting it to automatic might solve the problem. Follow these steps:
  1. Click Start > type services in the Search box > click Services in the Programs list.
  2. If you are asked for a Password before you continue, then enter the password > click Continue.
  3. Double-click Windows Defender, and click Automatic in the start-up box > click OK.
Uninstall and reinstall Windows Defender - If the first procedure did not help resolve the problem, try un-installing and then reinstalling Windows Defender. Due to the fact that Windows Defender is a Windows component, we will use AppWiz to un-install it from the computer. Follow these steps:
  1. Press Windows Key + R > type appwiz.cpl > Press Enter
  2. Click Windows Defender > click Remove
  3. Follow the prompts to uninstall Windows Defender

Let me know how you go!

i have a problem trying to turn on windows defender on my pc.. i try a few diferent ways but no luck.. can someone help with a solution that works for sure yhank s

At the startup of Windows XP, you may see an error that says "Unable to Start Windows Defender service". This issue occurs, if some of the registry entries are corrupted. Restarting the service from the service console may also prompt the same error.

To resolve this issue, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the Windows Defender. Follow the below mentioned steps:

1. Click Start, Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click Windows Defender, and click Remove.

This will uninstall Windows Defender. You can download and reinstall the updated version from the following link:
