Defective clock

I took the back up battery out and unplugged the unit for about 20 minutes before powering the clock back up. Once I powered the clock up I re-inserted the backup battery.

You have to change the internal battery. The type of battery is a CR2430. This battery has only a three year life span in ideal conditions. If you have had power outages or left the Clock/ Radio unplugged for long periods of time the battery life shortens. You can find the battery is most electronic stores and in large drugstores and supermarkets. Fry's electronics, Radio shack.You must unplug the radio from the plug and let the microprocessor discharge and reset itself. This will take about a hour. After you let it discharge, you can put the new battery in the Clock/Radio and check to see if the problem is fixed.If this does not fix the problem, you have a damaged microprocessor and will have to buy a new clock/radio. This type of display malfunctions is usually in the led segments operation or the drivers ic's. This may just be a matter of intermittent contact points. The repair would be to re-solder all suspect solder joints connections. The problem could also be with the components becoming defective. This would require a replacement of the defective part.
