Tip & How-To about Sewing Machines
I know this is old but it may help someone out there
I inherited a truly ancient Brother Compal 320, started sewing as a novice and did not dare do much for machine
Intermittently the machine would get stuck in reverse I'd faff around and put the machine on and off and needle up and down etc
It would go back to normal and I'd have wasted time and got irritated
But then it only did reverse
I looked at the manual
I looked at Google, I took off bits of casing, oiled it, de-linted it (and it really had not been done for a long time! The first time this happened was 2011, finally sorted and posting this in 2019...)
Then I found this YouTube video - for a much newer machine - and the guy is a good mechanic but not a great video technician (sweet)

But it made me see the lever I had to adjust...I did and undid various bits of tension in the whole mechanism until it came right (it's often the screw with tension-spring - watch out I spent 5 minutes searching for it as it went across the room)
It works now! AND the machine is sounding so much smoother (bonus)
