Tip & How-To about Light Outboard Motor Boat Bass Fishing Saltwater Base

Boat motor has no power

Boating season is coming again. if your boat motor will not start and it has a shifter box here is your most common problems.
1. the shifter cable has stretched and the neutral position on your shifter doesn't match the neutral position on the motor. this will make the boat think it's in gear which will keep your motor from starting. adjust your cable so it lines up again or replace it if it's too far out.
2. steering is stiff... always grease the rear grease nippers on your motor.. second get a cable sprayer attachment and a can of wd40 .. the attachment slips over the end of the cable and forces the wd40 down the casing.. spray until the fluid coming out of the far end comes out clean . then rehook the cable. do this for your shifter and acceleration cable if you have the duel type. bike shops carry the required tool.
3. replace the leg oil and if it is a 4 stroke the engine oil.
4. replace the spark plugs and carry a spare set +tools required to remove them.
5. check your batteries and make sure they are topped up. a small 40 watt trickle charger is an excellent addition. while your there check to see if the connections are tight and clean on both the motor end and the engine end.
check your bilge pump to ensure it is working.
6 make sure you carry a few spare fuses... I keep a package of mixed on board.
7. make sure your water pump is spitting out a good steady stream. you do this by getting water muffs and supplying water from a garden hose. once water is present and running passed the muffs at a good rate fire up the engine. the stream coming out in the back below the motor should be as steady as a fellow having a bathroom break. if it isn't get that pump replaced.. your motor is expensive.
8. put some spare fuel in a container on your boat.. I lost count of all the guys I towed back.
9. always carry a manual bailer , paddle, whistle , and flashlight with fresh batteries. and let some one know where your going and when you expect to be back.( I also carry dry clothes in a sealed vacuum bag , rain gear and most important 2 jugs of freshwater)
have fun and be respectful.

my suzuki outboard motor don't start. No spark. Where do i start to find the problem?

K. All outboards from the 1980's out have a built in kill switch. The most common problem for your issue is the shifter cable ( the one that puts you into forward ,neutral, or reverse) is stretched and you are not quite in neutral and are tripping the built in kill switch. Depending on the engine you will either not have anything happening when you turn the key or you will have zero spark or both. It is there to keep you from flying off the boat if you leave it in gear and forget. ... the second is corroded ground or loose ground on the engine or the battery. And third is a blown fuse at the engine end. To check if the problem is your shifter cable , just detach it from the engine and manually place it in neutral by grabbing the shift leaver located on the motor then try starting it again. If thats the issue then adjust the cable and order a new one and have it on stand by.. Throttle cable also. Both usually need to be replaced at the same time.

My quick silver 3000 throttle for my 1989 Searay mec cruiser is giving me trouble. It only starts if I wriggle it

Your shifter cable is most likely almost out of adjustment. What I think your issue is .... Your shifter cable has stretched so neutral on your shifter isn't actually neutral on your motor. There is a safety system built into every boat motor that will not allow the motor to start while in gear ( think early cartoons of the guy flying over the back when he fires up his boat) if that switch is even slightly out of position then your motor will not even send a signal to the starter. Try resetting the cable to its proper position. Next check that ground wire on the motor and make sure it's tight.... The cables maybe moving the ground wire around.

I have just got my boat out of storage for the winter, motor wont crank, and tilt&trim does not work either. New battery installed

Check your ground cable at the motor and the fuses . My ground cable was loose at the engine and she would start but as soon as the cables were shifted to speed up they would wiggle the ground cable and it would die. Here are the common things to check.
1. All fuses on the engine
2. Ground cable and positive cable tightness both battery end and motor .
3. Make sure the shifter cable is in neutral position at the engine and = 's that on the shifter end...they need to be adjusted once in a blue moon or they get out of sink and the motor will not start but it will show electrical at the shifter box. ( to adjust place the shifter in full forward position and see it the cables are pulling the throttle all the way forward and see if the forward neutral is all the way forward without pulling against you if not .. Adjustment screws are located on each end of the cable , make sure the cable is seated into its catch . If you have no adjustment left on either e
nd replace the cable.
4. Use high test gas always... it stops the float bowel from getting stuck and the filters from filling with junk when over wintering. ( if you can crank but the unit will not start then it is 99 percent of the time a gummed up float bowl.. Take it off clean it gentile as the tip will have rubber on it and can not be damaged. Signs of a float bowel problem (even the new efi systems have a float bowl) gas will free flow out of the carb (stuck open) or will crank and not start ( stuck closed) . The reason high test is recommended is the new formula for regular gas using plant based fuel actually attacks water molecules , breaks down within a month and forms varnish, and attacks and breaks down the fuel line which plugs off the filter and the carb with small micro bits of rubber. The newer higher percentage plant based gas (e85 ) only accelerates the issue.

Gear shifter locked in forward gear

If the gear lever is loose,it's the gear connection rod that you disconnect to do a g/box drop.If its not loose, drop the g/box off the leg and the first thing you find might be the problem.A loose bolt,a jammed shifter. It will probably be a connection problem than a g/box problemHope this helps

when the boat is in nuetral it can rev up when it is in gear out of the water it runs good when it is in gear motor lowered in the water it wont go above 1000 rpms yet when i take it out of the water and put the hose to it lowered it runs good

The last comment you made about the hose cuffs and running good- Was that in gear or neutral? If you are using the boats throttle lever there is a cam lever for the choke which limits the throttle. It may be out of sync in the control box. If you have operating cables disconnect them at the engine and see what range of motion you have in the motor itself. Then hook up the controls and see if the cables prevent the motor from opening the carbs.
