Tip & How-To about Kenmore Refrigerators

How to stop water dripping into Fridge

I have a 1970s vintage Sears/Kenmore Coldspot Frost Free fridge with freezer unit up top. Model No. C106 519660
Water was dripping into the fridge. The drain catchment for this is behind the light in the fridge compartment just below the freezer.
For this repair, there's no need to pull the power plug on your fridge! You will not be dealing with anything electrical. Unless you smash a light pulling the shield.
Take out as much of the fridge content necessary to access the drain.
Remove the light shield by pulling the bottom towards you and lifting up.
Remove the two phillips head screws holding the catch basin.
Pull the unit towards you, it has an attached plastic tube.
Clean out the ice and or crud in the tray and tube.
Replace tray, screws and light cover.
I spent Waaay to much time looking at YouTube videos of incorrect models and being misled into lots of extra work. Alas I had no time left for a photo.
Good Luck

water drips from the freezer into the fridge.Upon disassemble, there is ice buildup under the coils. kenmore coldspot model #71184101

The defrost timer or the defrost heater element has probably failed. Go to the link below and enter your exact model number; you should find a line-drawing illustration and parts list for your fridge that you can use to locate these items and normally also determine how to remove or install them:

Hi, I have a Kenmore coldspot top freezer, model # 106.70162990. it drips A LOT of water from the center to back in the top of the fridge, so much that it collects in the veggie and fruit bins and under them. any ideas?

Make sure the fridg. is level,(if it has been moved recently) there is a tube that allows the water from the evap. coils when defrosted to run to a drip pan. The tube is either frozen closed from prior defrosting or something is blocking the tube just below where it is leaking at. Turn fridg off and leave freezer door open (with a fan blowing in freezer if possible) for at least one hour and return to regular operation.

We have a kenmore coldspot refridgerator model #62854100 Since we've owned this model we've had a leaking problem from whatever the part is at the top and back of the refridgerator. We go through three towels a week absorbing water form the draining from inside our fridge. What's up with this? It's behind the adjustment controls for the fridge and freezer

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.
