Tip & How-To about Apple iTunes

If you can‘t connect to the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, or App Store

If you can't connect to the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, or App Store

Check your settings and network connections to try to fix the issue on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, PC, or Apple TV.
When you try to open the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, or App Store, you might see a "Cannot connect to iTunes Store" alert message or something similar. The iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store may also not load anything at all, or unexpectedly stop in the middle of downloading content.
If you have a separate issue where iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when you connect the device to your computer using a USB cable, get help.
If the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store loads as expected, but you can't log in, you can reset your Apple ID password.
Store availability and features might vary by country or region.

Check your connection

Make sure that your device is connected to the Internet. Try using an Internet browser to connect to any website and see if it loads. If it doesn't, use another device on the same network to see if it can connect to any website. If no other devices can access the Internet, turn your Wi-Fi router off and then on again to reset it. If you still can't connect to your Wi-Fi network, contact your Internet provider for more help.
If you use cellular service to connect to the Internet on your iPhone or iPad, make sure that you have cellular data turned on for the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, and App Store: Go to Settings > Cellular, and turn on Cellular Data. Learn what to do if you still can't connect to the Internet.

Check System Status

Visit the Apple System Status page to see if there are interruptions in service in your country or region.

Update your software

Update to the latest versions of iOS, macOS, tvOS, iTunes, or your PC's operating system. Then try to connect to the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store again.

Check the date and time

Make sure that the date and time on your device is set correctly for your time zone.
On your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Go to Settings > General > Date & Time. Get more help with date and time.
On your Mac: Open System Preferences > Date & Time.
On your Apple TV: Go to Settings > General > Date and Time.
On your PC: Search for timedate.cpl using the search box or Search charm.
If it's not, set the correct date and time, or turn on the option to set it automatically.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • If you're using cellular data to connect to the Internet, larger items might not download. You might need to connect to Wi-Fi to download games, apps, videos, and podcasts.
  • Depending on the size of the content you're downloading and the speed of your Internet connection, some items might take longer than expected to download. Learn more about download times for purchases.

On your Mac or PC

Follow the steps for your computer.

On your Mac

By default, the built-in application firewall for macOS automatically allows applications signed by Apple to receive incoming connections. If you've adjusted the settings for your application firewall, you might need to allow incoming connections. If the issue persists, reset the cache of accepted certificates:
  • Click your desktop to make sure that you're in Finder.
  • From the menu at the top of your computer screen, choose Go > Go to Folder.
  • In the box, enter /var/db/crls/.
  • Click Go.
  • Drag the files labeled crlcache.db and ocspcache.db to the Trash.
  • If prompted, enter your administrator password.
  • Restart your computer, then try to connect to the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, or App Store.

On your PC

On your Apple TV

  • If you can't connect to the iTunes Store, App Store, or any streaming video services, make sure you have an active network connection in Settings > Network. Get help with Wi-Fi networks on your Apple TV.

The steps in this article can also help you fix issues that are related to these error messages:
  • "Cannot connect to the iTunes Store. An unknown error has occurred."

How do I use this for buying e-books?

Purchasing ebooks through the iBooks Store is very similar to buying any other media via Apple's iTunes Store. One key difference, though, is how you access the store. Rather than through iTunes or a dedicated app like the iTunes Store app on the iPad and iPhone, in this case, you access it through the iBooks app.
In the top left corner of the iBooks app is a button that reads "Store". To access the iBooks Store and begin shopping for iPhone- and iPad-compatible ebooks, tap that button.

Once you enter the iBooks Store, the browsing and searching experience is very similar to using the iTunes Store. In this case, you can search for the author or title you want in the top-right corner search box.
To browse books, either tap the icons on the main page of the store or tap the "Categories" menu item in the top left corner. This drops down a menu with all of the iBooks store's categories in it. Tap the category you're looking for to see books in that genre.

In the iBooks Store, when you tap a book title to get more details (synopsis, reviews, etc.) a window pops up and the background grays out a bit.
In this window, you can download a free sample of the book to your iBooks library by tapping the "Get Sample" button. This is the equivalent of iTunes' 30-second song preview, which helps you get a sense of whether you want to purchase the book.
When you decide to purchase a book, tap the price on the left side of the screen next to the book cover. The button will turn green and read "Buy Book". Tap it again to buy the book.
To close the pop-up window and not buy the book, simply tap anywhere outside the window.

You buy at the iBooks Store using the same iTunes account and password as you do at the iTunes Store or App Store. When buying a book, you'll be prompted to enter your password to pay for the ebook before it will begin downloading.

Once you've entered your iTunes account password, the eBook will download to your iPad. How long this takes will depend on the book (its length, how many images it has, etc.).
When the book is done downloading, it will appear as a title on the bookshelves in the iBooks app. Tap it to begin reading.

How do you download books on an apple ipad

An Internet connection is required. On iOS devices such as the iPad, the iBooks App includes the iBooks Store. Tap the iBooks icon and your bookshelf appears. In the upper corner, tap the Store button and the bookshelf flips around to reveal the iBooks Store. From the iBooks Store, you can browse books by title, author, or genre. You can also view featured books as well as books available on the New York Times bestseller lists (United States only). Tap on a book to see more details and download a free sample. When you buy a book, it will automatically appear on your iBooks bookshelf.

My i-pod touch (8Gb) can't connect to internet

This worked for me: Went into SETTINGS > Wi-Fi > Selected my Network (which my iPod said I was already connected to) > Selected "Forget this Network" (which disconnects you from your network) > Re-selected my network and under password, I entered the 'Security Key' from my Verizon FIOS Tech Wizard info and the device accessed the app store successfully.
