Tip & How-To about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

Playstation 3 has sound but not showing picture

It sounds like you have changed your display settings either to HDMI but are not connected with HDMI or you have set the progressive scan to ON and it's not supported by your TV. Try turning off the Playstation 3 and then hold the power button for about 5 seconds, until you hear a second set of beeps. This procedure will reset your display settings, then auto detect your connection, provided you have kept up with the updates. If you have kept up with the updates or aren't sure, you can use the same steps, but you will need to be connected via Composite Cable and not HDMI. If this doesn't work, you may need to send it in for reparis.

I can't turn off the Progressive Scan feature on my Sony DVP-NC85H. I tried pressing 3, 6, and 9 while the unit was off but had no success. Apparently I can't use the HDMI connection unless the Progressive Scan feature is turned off. Any suggestions?

When your player is connected thru HDMI cable it should automatically detect what your TV's display is capable of. I am assuming that you have the DVD player connected to a HD television. There should be a progressive scan button on the front of the player. But I don't think the button will work when it is connected to HDMI. How do you have the player connected? Is it directly to the TV or does it go thru a switch or a reciever then to the TV? If it is connected this way then that can be the problem. There is a signal that needs to make it to the TV and these devices can block the signal. So verify that it is connected directly to the TV and that the HDMI cable is working. If that is ok then connect another connection to the TV along with the HDMI cable also hooked up. Then change your TV's input selection to that connection. You should be able to get to the dvd menu and set the HDMI output from auto to a format that your TV will accept. Then go back to the HDMI input and see if you have a picture. Let me know if that helps.

invalid format message on my 42 lg flat screen

Check the resolution capabilities in the manual. It sounds like you either have your DVD set to 1080P which some TV's don't do progressive scan. Set the DVD or whatever to lower resolution like 1080i or 720i. It depends how you hook it up though because if you have it connected HDMI or DVI you can usually do this but with analog you usually can't change the setting.
