It could be that the LCD unit/digitzer is going bad. You can order the replacement parts from numerous places (ebay, amazon, etc.) for probably under $150. If you've never attempted to do something like that I would recommend finding a local repair shop or sending it out as you can very easily break something trying to do it yourself.

The batterys on those phones are known for defective batterys especially when you plug them up at night before you go to sleep and leave them plugged. It usually only takes 2 hours to charge so 8 hours when its already fully charged is going to kill the life of the battery.

If you are not charging or using your phone to cause the battery to heat up, it's time for a new battery before this one destroys your phone from a messy explosion.
