First you have to check your service provider if you have activated this service because here in South Africa it cost a nominal fee for caller ID

should you dial 9 or another access code for outside calls? If if you dial an "outside" number on an intercom line it will look at the first 2-3 digits as another extension. You need to dial the Central Office access code, or use a line key assigned to an outside line.

It is probably made that way, but if it wasn't like that out of the box first plugged in, than there should be a button to make it brighter. (or it might just be you...)
