Invacare Pronto M51 Power Wheelchair Questions & Answers
I have an older M51
Yes it does.
The new switch is the problem. The old toggle had a momentary ON when turned on and a jumper wire on two of the three toggle contacts.
How to remove drive wheel
The drive wheel has a locking tab washer under the bolt which holds the wheel assembly on the end of the drive shaft. Step one is to bend the tab (or tabs) away from the side of the bolt. Put a socket on the bolt to remove it. Make note of the washer and lock tab orientation because there is another tab on the inside which locks into the motor shaft keyway. Spray lube into the shaft and keyway to free up the wheel and remove. A wheel puller is sometimes helpful here. When replacing the parts use Loctite on the bolt and tighten. The final step is to bend a lock tab up against the bolt head to keep it from backing out. The hard part of this whole process is removing the wheel assembly from the motor shaft. It may have seized on to the shaft. Place anti-seize or grease on the shaft after cleaning and before reassembly.

How can I determine whether the on-board charger is working?
The m51 is notorious for failure of the on-board charger. An easy check would be to plug an off board charger into the 3 prong female charging receptacle at the front of the joystick to see if you can bring the voltage up. You can test the on board charger with a voltmeter at the battery connections or charger joystick port with the charger plugged in. Hope this helps
My m51 flashes 11 times on joy stick what is that
The diagnostic code would indicate a bad control box. It could also be too low a voltage from the batteries or a bad or broken wire or connector between the joystick and the control box. Chair will need a technician from a good dealer to help out if battery's and wiring are good.
Light come on controller no flashing code lights joy stick does not work
The M51 could have the motor clutch levers in the free wheel/push mode and the joystick will not blink if this is the case. Make sure that the chair cannot be pushed. If it can be pushed it means it is in free wheel and you need to lock the motors in gear.
If it is in gear and the joysticks green light does not change color or blink it could be that the joystick is bad. When nothing happens and the lights don't blink when you push the joystick knob the chairs controller basically isn't recognizing the joystick movement.
Time to have the joystick repaired or more. Have a technician look at it.
Left wheel will not move when engaged
This could be a few things. You may have a bad motor, a bad cable, a bad brake unit that will not release, a bad controller.
Try the easy stuff first:
1. I would make sure the motor is plugged into the controller first. sometimes a bad connection will do this.
2. Check all the wiring to see if there is any damage to the motor and the brake (4 wires - the brake will have 2 black or white wires and the motor will usually have a red and black)
3. Listen for a clicking sound from the brake - if no click then it is very likely that it is bad.
4. Check the brushes - if they are less than 3/4 inch long, they are worn badly and need to be replaced. Usually if they are this worn the motor is going to run very rough - replacing the brushes will only be a temporary fix - you will need to replace the motors.
5.You can switch the motor leads and see if you get the same results - be careful - switching the motor leads makes everything run the opposite way (right would be left) - if the problem goes away, you had a bad connection.
6. If you still have problems, it would be best to get a tech to look at it.
I don't really think you have a bad controller. from what I understand, the chair runs, but only with 1 motor - if the controller was bad, it would not work at all.
My pronto m51 when i charge it the lights do not come on until i push shut off again
If you are referring to the three lights as the three colors red, yellow and green. Then you would normally get that. The circuit is telling you that something is attached to the chair, has faulty component or a motor unlocked. and you can't move. The rapid blinking would tell me that you have a controller fault or a motor fault and a rapid scroll left to right would be an inhibit. I would need to know which one it is doing to know for sure what what to look for. If it is just three lights then I would definitely look at the joystick and/or controller being faulty.
