Hi Maggie.
Intermatic no longer makes HB71 timer, and I cannot find instructions for the timer.
Intermatic website is offline on weekends starting March 2011, but I have searched the site numerous times over past year and they do not post that manual.
However I might be able to piece together steps if you add a comment and include in-focus photo of timer and buttons. Also include anything you can remember about setting the timer.

My understanding so far is that this timer has 2 slide buttons, and several push buttons.
Typically slide button timers require both slide buttons to be in one position for setting timer, and another position for programming timer, and another position for operating timer. The complicated steps are why timer has been replaced with newer models with sleeker programming.

If you do not want to bother sending photograph, or working on the problem, then buy another outdoor timer for 20$

Other suggestions are to remove the synchronous motor and check/replace that. It is the motor that drives the clock and can be ordered through irrigation outlets.

There could be two problems.

Worn trippers could cause sprinkler to change zones.

Water pressure can also be causing problem.

This device is simply a 24 hour timer. It has a special enclosure classified as "Rain Tight" that helps prevent rain from entering - as water from a hose directed at it would enter the enclosure causing damage to the timer.

It is NOT a timer designed to operate a traditional pop-up sprinkler system. Those timing devices allow water to flow into the lawn sprinkler system and spray out from a certain area of sprinklers for a predetermined amount of time, then switches this area or zone off and turns on the next. This continues until all zones have watered the area where sprinklers have been installed.

The device you are asking about simply switches power on and off to one load. It can not control multiple loads - or as in your case "zones". You would install ON trippers at the time of day on the yellow time disc when the load would be ON and install OFF tripper when the load should be turned OFF. If the load were a light, you could turn this light on and off many times a day - dependent only on how many ON and OFF trippers you installed on the yellow time disc.

A sprinkler timer must be selected instead. This will allow you to select the number of days between watering, will operate many zones, control of how long the water is to remain on to each zone, detect if it has recently rained or if it is currently raining, etc. One is pictured below:

HB31R heavy duty 1800 Watt outdoor plug-in timer is one-piece unit that does not come apart for repairs.

Usually with these mechanical dial timers, when the clock motor starts getting weak, the timer dial starts to stall when tripper meets on-off lever.
And then timers runs slow.
At this point, the little plastic gears are getting stripped out, or the clock motor is overheating.
In either case, the clock motor is spiraling downward.

If this is new timer, take it back.
If this is older timer, the manual and fact sheet do not show a warranty.

With larger heavy duty outdoor timers like the Intermatic T-101R outdoor 120Volt timer, you can buy the clock motor separate and replace when clock goes bad. And you can buy the trippers separate. However T100 series timers are not plug-in, they are hard-wired. T-101 is made to last 10-15 years, but cost $60-70. My local Lowes sells them in stock for less.

The ON-OFF pins rotate around until they come in contact with a lever. The clock motor pushes the pin forward until it clicks the on-off lever. The pins are softer metal than the lever, so the pins wear out.

If you need a new T-103 timer some day > the new timer mechanism can snap right into the old box without changing boxes.

If the dial is not rotating, then you can replace the T100 series 125 Volt clock motor (the T103 clock motor is 125V)

Remove mechanism by pushing thumb spring located top inside box and read number printed on clock motor.
For example WG1573 or WG1570.
Google search that specific number for new motor.

Motors attach with 2 star screws, buy star screwdriver at auto parts or hardware.
Motors have 2 small white wires that attach to screw terminals. Re-tighten screws very tight against copper wire.

Hi, Not understanding exactly.....do you have two timers or does the same timer run the lights and filter??? I think that the timer motor went bad in your timer...... That can be replaced, but often till you replace the motor and figure the time involved... it is just as good to replace the whole timer....

Make sure the on and off indicators are approximately an hour away from the current time you wish to set the timer to. Using your thumb and one of your fingers (ring, index or middle) grasp the edge of the yellow time indicator. Pull the time indicator straight out away from the back of the unit. While the time indicator is pulled out rotate the wheel to the correct time in reference to the time pointer. Release the time indicator and set the on and off indicators to the desired times in reference to the time printed on the time indicator. Manually move the bottom switch to on or off state which the timer should be at the current time. If you do not see the time wheel move after approximately 30 minutes the timer could be defective.

Yes that is what is happening.
The tripper is designed to wear down and preserve timer mechanism.

Your tripper is pushing lever part of the way over causing contacts to open.
After tripper passes, the lever goes back and contacts close.

To set current time, lift and rotate dial until current time lines up with silver pointer.
For timer to operate, add on-off trippers to edge of dial at times you want Load to operate.

You can add a comment with brand and model number that shows inside timer door for best possible answer. Please add what symptoms you observe.
If you have brand different than Intermatic, then add specific brand like Tork or Paragon or GE.

1) For example is clock dial rotating? If not, then tip mechanism out of box and look for clock motor number printed on clock motor.
2) If dial is rotating as time passes, and keeping correct time, then you might need new trippers.
3) Does manual override lever click crisp and clean, or is it stiff and stuck from rust? If override doesn't work, then replace timer.
4) Does manual override lever turn load on-off? If not, then check circuit breaker, and check that load (light bulb or motor) is functioning.

5) You can buy extra trippers and motors by searching for specific number that appears on clock. For example WG1570 or WG1573

These timers work in following way:
Clock motor rotates dial.
ON-OFF trippers are attached on edge of dial
As trippers rotate around, they push on-off lever.
Lever snaps back and forth with audible sound.
Lever moves electric contacts that open and close circuit.
To set current time, lift and rotate dial until current time lines up with stationary silver pointer which is positioned at 6 o'clock.
Manual override lever clicks circuit on-off.

Line wires from breaker box connect to specific screw terminals.
Clock motor also connects to screw terminals with small white wires.
Load wires going to light fan motor connect to specific screw terminals.

When power goes out, the current time has to be reset.
Pull yellow dial outward, and then rotate dial until current time lines up with silver pointer.

Some folks mistakenly move the silver pointer when trying to set current time.
The silver pointer is stationary at the 6 o'clock position.

Model number of timer shows on inside of timer door.
This type of timer has on and off trippers attached to dial.
Dial rotates as time passes.
Trippers push a lever back and forth that opens-and-closes circuit to lights.

Sounds like you have Line and Load wires reversed.
Line wires come from breaker to timer.
Load wires leave timer and go to Load (light, fan, motor, pump)

As a serviceman myself, I can tell you that selling parts for stuff ends up with serviceman spending time on the phone helping to repair the thing for free. Not just that, but servicemen have to salvage parts and know which parts to salvage, and then inventory the parts, and remember where all that dang stuff is ... and with overhead, and cost of labor and trucks, the part costs the same as a service call. So hire the guy or buy a new one.
