Sounds like your wife's kindle is registered in your name. You can find out by logging into your account on amazon. Up the top open your account window then scroll down and click on " Manage Your Devices". I am assuming you want to reset the Kindle Fire to its factory settings. Check the attached video for procedure. How to Reset Kindle

In your set up menu you will see register. I always have problems with that so I use computer. log onto amazon.com next to search bar is Your Account. place mouse on that to bring up list, click your account. There is a lot of info on that page but I usually go to kindle help home, click. Fill in info and choose email or phone for them to answer back.

Maybe try taking it where you got it or take it to a computer store. Maybe it could be dead. Try charging it.
