To reset your Kindle, press or tap the "Menu" button on the Home screen and select "Settings." The "Settings" screen appears. Press or tap the "Menu" again and select "Reset to Factory Defaults." YourKindle will start the resetting process and power off automatically.

Try holding the on/off button down for several seconds; about 30 or so. It should flash and try to restart. If that doesn't work go online to amazon.com, under the search bar click help. fill in the info about your problem. Leave a phone number and they will call back to talk you through the fix.

Please check out the two links below. The first link will take you to Amazons Fire and Kindle software update page. Scroll down until you find your device, click on it and read through the documentation.
The second link explains the update and why it is needed in more detail. Please read the second link first before using the first link.
Also, if you Kindle is connected to wifi and is set to sync and update, it SHOULD download and apply the update on its own.
