Hard drive failure

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error you could run the check disk utility click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive then defragment your hard drive or control panel administrive tools, computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart hope this helps

When I plug into the computer, computer does not

If the drive is used as an external drive ie. in a usb caddy, then check the caddy is fitted correctly and that the cable is not damaged. if the drive is internal, try using a different power connection and a different ide/sata socket on the motherboard also check if the drive is set to master, slave or csl (the jumper on the back of the drive next to the connection socket; there will be info on the drive (the white label on top) telling you where the jumper should go. If the drive is ide, and the drive is not the main drive but on the same cable as the main drive, the jumper should be set to "slave" or "sl" If the drive is sata, set the jumper to "master" or "ma". If all else fails, set the jumper to "cable select" or "csl"
hope this helps.

Maxtor 40gb disk diamond max

Is the hard drive full check it by going to my computer see the hard drive go to properties check that and then see how much space is available. I highly recommend a bigger hard drive especially if you download things quite a bit or move files to another source external USB flash drives work well or external drive will do the job. Check the space if it is fine and you have enough room then something in one of those files is stopping the drive from working. Reformat get all you can off of it then install the software Operating software again starting over fresh. I usually do my drives about 1 or twice a month reinstall software back to its original so that I do not get packed with junk I do not have to deal with or see. Also it is advisable to clean and defrag disks frequently some will tell you do not have to do this I can tell you since I have been doing for over 20 years now I just do not have problems with my computers. Datarecovery

I met this kind of problem before, the MOST effective way is to if you can rely on some so-called data recovery software for help.

First of ALL - Connect your hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem!

How to set drive for slave function and master

You can change the jumper settings near to the data cable port to change the master slave settings on most of the HDDs. Most probably you can see the labels near tot he jumpers itself to change the master slave settings. You can see the below picture for reference.. please set that according to the label near to the jumper pins..

I just bought a new

The drive will need to be reformatted to the HFS file spec for Mac. You will lose any data on the drive when you do that.

However, you shouldn't need to do anything other than plug the drive into your iMac, then once the icon appears on your desktop (may take a minute), double-click on it to start the Mac install process.

If the Mac install process fails for some reason, it may be because the drive was previously installed on a Windows machine, and you may have to simply treat it as a "raw" new drive, and reformat it using the Mac operating system utilities.

Hope that's helpful.

My computer does not recognize the HD. What should

You are sure both power and data cables are connected. Or did this problem just happen from one day to the next? If so then your HD is likely dead.

You can check that the bios still sees it. If not then your cables are not connected. If your bios sees it and OS doesn't then you have a crashed HD.
