These mechanical timer machines have to follow a series of logical steps to complete the program - ie, empty. fill to level 1. wash. heat to temp. etc etc My guess is the machine is not heating, as you say it works for part of the program - or possibly it is not emptying correctly? check water heating element and drain pump. Program 4 eco is a separate program from 3, using low temperature washing - the machine does stop between 3 and 4 normally and doesnt carry on through.

Most likely the smell is coming from a motor that is having a hard time turning, so it's overheating. Don't run it or it might catch fire!

Does it void any waste water at all?

power on. hold power scrub and delicate buttons (Cancel Drain) down for three seconds. Unplug and plug in again.

This is most likely because the seal for the top spray bar is bad/missing or has debris in it or in the pump.

Probably a broken spring. They rust and break off. I had to replace the ones on my Kenmore. The Kenmore was in the front, but my new Frigidaire is in the rear. Have to pull it almost all the way out to get at them. :(

do you pre rinse the dishes before puting in dw?if so stop and dont use as much detergant

I would check the bottom of the dishwasher to see if there are any bones, old food built up as some of these collection systems have a small disposer built into them.
If you find any food, it's probably that.
Also, you can make sure that the drain line is the proper length and high enough as this is a common problem. Do a good search on proper drain height for dishwasher.
You may run an empty load of dishes with a cup of bleach added to eliminate the odor as well. Bleach will kill any bacteria causing the smell. More than likely the drain hose wasn't installed correctly.

If your machine does not drain you need to check this

• Inspect the drain hose for kinks
• Test the timer control
• Test the lid switch (some models)
• Inspect the water pump
  
• Inspect the drive belt (belt drive only)
• Inspect the motor coupler

Before testing the lid switch, unplug the washer or shut off the power at the fuse box or breaker panel to avoid an electrical shock hazard.

some dishwashers have water left after the final rinse. it is important to keep the motor seals wet between loads. My filter is always immersed. If we go away for two weeks, I put 2 litres of water into the tub and let it soak 24 hr so that I never start it with dry seals.

Check this link. Multiple causes are possible yet most is how drain is hooked up to disposal and back pressure built up. Hose must be installed correctly.

I would say it is an earthing problem, check over your earth wires, normally black and grey is neutral, check to make sure your earth wires are connected properly, and tight, better to completely turn appliance off by disconecting power plug while doing this, take care not to play around with the wires too much to prevent a nasty electric shock

A pump usually isn't found on the inlet side. Most such appliances have sediment screens located in the water inlet connections. These will sometimes get blocked with sediment such as lime, for example. Otherwise, you may have a defective controller or defective solenoid. Most units have two solenoids (hot & cold). The solenoids are located at the water inlet hookup (the screen is usually a part of the solenoid). When the washer is started, a metallic click should be heard from the solenoids. Beyond checking the screens and water valves, a repairman should be called in, unless you're skilled with a voltmeter, electrical troubleshooting, and appliance disassembly.

BTW- is this a new installation or has the unit been in service for awhile?
