First thing I would do is test the hard drive to make sure it is good. If new, that does not guarantee that it is good. Use a hard drive adapter that allows you to connect it to the USB port of another computer and run a full test.

If you mean the Maxtor disk utility that comes with raw hard drives, it is NOT necessary to install this in order for the drive to work. If the new computer already has an OS on it and is working, what part of the Maxtor utility is it that you think you need? The OS has all the tools you would need to work with the disk. Or you could always download a 3rd party app to do the specific task. If this is regarding an external drive, again the new computer ( and OS) will have whatever tools you would need to work with the disk. In fact you should only have to plug the external disk into the USB port and the new computer will find it and ask how you want to use it, etc. The Maxtor disk utilities that came with raw drives is pretty much obsolete when used with a current Windows or Mac OS.

you only need to do this if you have only one IDE cable. If your are using SATA cables there is no need. IDE is the big wide ribbon cable SATA is the little blue connector.

Is this an unused drive? What is the cable interface - IDE or SATA? What operating system are you using? Is this a PC or a laptop? 2.5" or 3.5" version? What have you actually done with the computer/drive and software in your attempts to install the drive?

Depends on what you want to do with the files. Data is usually interchangeable between Mac and PC file formats. FAT-32 format files are limited to 4gb in size. You cannot boot a Mac from one of these files or from a drive formatted to FAT-32. To be bootable, an Intel Mac system drive must be formatted as a GUID partition map. Most of the new hard drives come with software that enables Macs to read and write to them without reformatting, thus they are completely interchangeable for data.

Use Disk Utility program to get the details of the drive on USB Port. Located in Applications / Utilities. This offers general First Aid for the drive. This Disk Utility can also Format a drive & Partition it. Which will ERASE everything! For reliability.... TEST the drive selecting a One Pass Security Erase which takes a lot longer but thoroughly checks all sectors for bad areas. TJ
