Always start inside and work outwards while going 180 degrees acrosss each new bolt, dont get them to rated torque all at one time work in a sereis of increments always inside to out and across from each other and you will be fine, car wheels , everything is this way.

Heat in that location noted is to be expected, but to the degree that it is should be of some concern.When was the oil changed in the compressor last?If you are running with a multiviscosity oil, use it only if the manual indicates it. Running straight weight oils, especially in extreme conditions is prudent insurance against failure. If you are running 10W20 for example- run 20 weight instead until regular air temps are below freezing- then the switching to 10 weightshould be a consideration..The oil sump serves 2 purposes- 1- Coolant. 2-lubrication. However I think the bearings in in the compressor are needing attention. More because it sounds like there is an oiling problem in the compressor itself. At an absolute minimum it sounds like the head should be pulled to inspect for galling in the cylinder walls and to look for trace oil on the cylinder wall.
