Engine running but blades dont move
if its electric/battery operated suspect stripped gears and throw it away as you tried to cut something to big with it. If its gas then suspect the same thing but it's repairable
Engine runs but blades dont move
John:
My bet is that the drive gears are stripped. Lay the machine on it's back and see the 4 screws that hold the sole plate on to the body of the machine, (The sole plate is also the bottom cutting frame that the blade slides against). Remove the 4 screws (be careful... there will be a small circular bushing under the sole plate and it likes to jump out, fall off of the table, and run under the nearest immovable object!) Remove the sole plate and blade and upper cutting frame as a unit. You can now see the gears that drive the blade, and one (or both) of the gears will be stripped of it's teeth. Go to the manufacturer's website and you might be able to buy new gears.
Reassembling blades on hedge trimmer
the blades are stuck , i spray my trimmer with wd40 before every use to keep them juicy you should too. also sometimes if you hit a large stick it will put a divot in the blade cause ing it to stick. as for putting it together, find some one who can do it without directions. but when you use them next make sure you soak em good with wd40 or something if you dont i guarantee they will always stick. wd40 willl not hurt any shrubbery, as ive been doing it for years.
Can I get my Ryobi
If the blade set is bolted together, then a local repair shop should be able to sharpen them. Look for a shop that works on Echo or Stihl hedgers, as they can be sharpened. If the blade set is riveted together, then it must be replaced as a unit. You did not list the model or item number for your hedger, but try
www.ereplacementparts.com or
www.ordertree.com . Both sites will allow you to type in your model or item number to look up all the available parts.
Good luck!
Ryobi 18V Hedge Trimmer Blade Question
I use a dremel with a sharpening stone, if u don't have one you can also use a power drill with a small sanding disk (1 inch) and course sand paper (30 or 40 grit). or you can use a bastard file. its too tight to use any kind of angle guide so just take your time and do it by eye. it shouldn't take much to get them sharp enough to do the job, over-sharpening is unnecessary and dangerous, and will make the blades dull faster. sharpen all the free blades, top and bottom, then start the trimmers to advance the blades to free up the sides you couldn't get. i use a light penetrating oil to clean the blades first, then lithium grease spray to lubricate.
