I didn't drop this phone near water but felt the moisture was the issue with hot summer temps. with the 8330 bb, none of the buttons (only trackball worked- no buttons) Leaving it in rice for a day didn't work at all.
On the last resort attempt, believe it or not, the oven trick did!

1. preheated for 200˚F
2. turned off oven
3. took battery out of BB
4. placed on plate
5. left bb for exactly 20mins in closed oven
6. once i took bb out I waited 5 mins and then placed battery and turned on.
7. worked like a charm

To Fix this issue you need to re-install Blackberry Device Software

Did it get wet at all? If so, there is an area under the track ball that is very sensitive to humidity. Cleaning that area with a brush to remove any of residue that may have remained after letting the phone dry can sometime get it up and running again. If you're out of warranty try to remove the trackball and clean the area below it if necessary.
