Message that memory card needs to be formatted. I

Use a card reader to safely download them to your computer. Then, format the card in the camera. This will erase it and optimize it. You should do this every so often.

How often should the camera be charged

This is not a straight forward question, it would depend on how often you wisg to use it. It also depends on the type of batteries you have installed. Nic Cad, Polymer, NMH. Polymer don't need charging often because they have good holding power for months. The cadmium and NMH types need a regular charge, for instance at least a top up onjce a month to keep them live. If you dont use the camera much remove the batteries whjen in storage place them in a kliplock bag and place in freezer. This may be extremem but keeps the batteries alive for years.

Always before use fully charge the ewith an intelligent charger, one that stops when capacity is reached. This prevents damage from Overcharging.

Kodak digital camera M1073 IS

First make sure that the camera has fresh or fully charged batteries installed. If a battery swap or charge doesn't cure the problem, remove the batteries and clean the battery contacts inside the camera with a soft cloth (a heavy buildup on the contacts may require cleaning with a fine wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that the cleaning leaves in the camera, and then reinstall the batteries. This clears most power-on problems, but if yours persists, check the Kodak troubleshooting guide at:

M1073 not turning on

Your fix could be as simple as cleaning the camera's battery contacts, or it could be something more serious and expensive. First try removing the batteries and cleaning the camera contacts with a small metal brush, steel wool, or fine sandpaper. If that doesn't fix the problem, check the Kodak Help Center by clicking on the link below. It uses a simple Q&A format to diagnose problems and propose solutions.

My camera won't stay turned on

Its possible that dirt, sand had got stuck between your lens barrel and the body and that why the lens is giving you problems.

You can try some of the following solutions to help you out:

1).Remove the batteries from the camera, wait a few minutes. Put a fully charged batteries back in and turn the camera on. if it doesnot work then,

2: Remove the batteries again, as also remove the memory card. Then install the newly charged batteries, when you turn it on it should come back to life.

3: Insert the cameras Audio/Video (AV) cable, and turn the camera on. Inserting this cable ensures that the camera's LCD screen remains off during the start process. Thus extra battery power is available to the camera's lens motor during start up. This extra power can be useful to overcome any grit or sand particles that may be jamming the lens.
4: Blow compressed air in the gaps around the lens barrels with the idea of blowing out any sand or grit that may be in there jamming the lens. Other variations include blowing with a hair dryer in “no heat” setting, or sucking the gaps with a vacuum
5: Repeatedly tap the padded/rubber usb cover with the intent of dislodging any particles that may be jamming the lens. Other variations include hitting a side of the camera against the palm of your hand. Dont try very hard please.

Try the above and let me if its any help.

If the above does not help. Then you would need to take it to the nearest service center.

Kodak Z981 -- mode dial issue

I have a Z981 myself. I just set my camera as you did (to "A") but did not experience the issue you mention? Just to be clear, remember that setting the camera to "A" means "Aperture priority", meaning that you can control the lens aperture (with the "jog dial" on the top of the camera) and the camera will automatically set the shutter speed to create a proper exposure. "A" does NOT mean automatic exposure control. You must use "P" (Programmed) mode to make the camera make all the decisions about shutter speed and lens aperture. I am including a web link to the User Guide for the Z981. You might want to revisit the Guide to make sure you are using the correct settings for your pictures. BTW, I like my Z981 quite a bit, especially the zoom. I've taken some great pictures with it. http://resources.kodak.com/support/pdf/en/manuals/urg01118/Z981_xUG_GLB_en.pdf

Everything woks on my camera except the display window, it stays black all the time and I don't know what I am taking a picture of.

Sounds like your screen is toast and time to find a new camera. They are not cost-effective to replace on a lower-cost camera.
