In most cases the printer driver software can have errors while being in use or is shut down. So to reset remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and then connect the Printer ONLY WHEN PROMPTED, to be detected as a new hardware as it will be installed. Now check the printer properties to see the ink levels.
Activate head cleaning before a test is taken. Sometimes it is possible that the head is not reacting to the need of the PC command or can be an issue with ink drying or poor ink cartridge contacts. Sometimes the power supply unit must be checked as a poor SMPS unit can deliver low voltage and cause issues to the printer function. Check all the leads and connections of the mother board , the tags to the ink cartridge. Also check the mechanical settings of the ink cartridge , if jammed or tight remove motor and manually free the drive before it is set back.

I PUT NEW CARTRIDGE IN .IT SAYS THERE IS NO CARTRIDGE
Remove the cartridge. Check the electrical connector runs on the cartridge and inside the printer. Ink and debris can get on these, causing errors. Wipe with a clean, dust free cloth. Reinstall the cartridge, ensuring that it is seated completely. If that fails to work, reinstall the old cartridge and ensure that it is recognized (albeit empty). If that works, and the new cartridge doesn't, then contact the manufacturer about a defective cartridge (they do occasionally happen). The retailer that sold the cartridge may offer to exchange it, but often you must go through the manufacturer for a refund.

Cartridge problem
Sometimes the cartridges are just plain defective, no matter how much they cost. save yourself some grief and just replace both of them and see what happens.
I'm having cartridge problems with lexmark z2420 printer
The
problem could be due to a communication failure between one of the printheads
(cartridges) and the All-In One (AIO) or by a short in one if the printheads. Please follow the steps
below to identify and fix cartridge issues:
- Make sure the printer is on.
- Open the printer cover. The
print cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position, unless
the All-In-One is busy. Note: If the carrier does not automatically move
to the center, turn off the printer or unplug the printer from the power
source and then carefully slide the carrier to the center.
- Remove both cartridges from the
carrier.
- Close the printer cover.
- Re-brick your printer by
pulling out the power supply - black box behind the printer where the
power cord is plugged in to, and re-plug after 30 seconds.
- When the printer turns on,
reinsert one cartridge first. Close the printer cover and check for any
errors.
- If no error appears, reinsert
the other cartridge. Close the printer cover.
- Replace whichever cartridge is
causing the error to appear with a new genuine Lexmark cartridge. Try to
print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed.
I recently replaced both the black and the color cartridges but I'm still getting the message to replace the color cartridge. Please explain why this would happen and if i can fix it?
The problem could be due to a communication
failure between the color cartridge and the All-In One (AIO) or
by a short in the color cartridge. Here's what you can do:- Try to re-seat the cartridges in the printer. Open the printer
cover > remove the cartridges > close the printer cover > re-brick you
printer by pulling out the power supply - black box behind the printer where
the power cord is plugged in, and re-plug after 10 seconds. When the printer
turns on, reinsert the cartridges and close the cover. Try to print a document
again to verify that the problem is fixed.
- Try to insert a different known working cartridge to identify if it's a faulty cartridge issue.
- Ensure that you are inserting original supplies. Refilled, re-manufactured or clone cartridges are not recommend for use with your printer. These are unreliable and tend to fail unexpectedly. If you're using genuine Lexmark cartridges yet it continues to fail, please contact the Lexmark Technical Support Center for further assistance.
