Since the receiver itself has no sources 7.1 onboard, the question obviously involves unnamed external equipment.

Set it and any other equipment in accordance with their manual(s).

Pioneer VSX 816 X.

HelloThe output stage circuit of your Pioneer should be checked well to detect this fault. As sound output comes right at first, and it goes of intermittently, distorted and interrupted, there must be some overheating components are there in the audio output state of your set. As you know, there is no one sentence answer to any electronic devices' fault, as they are composed of thousands of components together, by soldering technique. Each and every component in it will and should work properly to what it is desigened to, otherwise fault will occur. There is an overheat protection circuit composed with the audio output section of most hi-watts amps. If this circuit has some trouble with it, the output section components will overheat, shutdown, distorted sound and such faults will occur. It is very easy to repair a 'dead' set, than this type of faulty set. One have to check each and every component and should detect out the faulty component. It is really a very skilled work, and one must have thorough knoledge in electronics and proper measuring equipements to go up. A very high quality digital multimeter is a must to follow this fault. Moreover, a sound knoledge in following the schematic diagram of the set, which will look entirely different to that of the circuit boards inside.Eventhough, this fault is very simple and no costly components has not burned out till now, I advice you to get this set repaired by any experienced service technician, or by the authorised service center for Pioneer at your town. Never switch ON this set till this fault has been rectified. It may make things more worse. For anyone, whatever experienced he or she may be, will take some time to detect this fault. OK.

I own a Pioneer receiver, model VSX-516-K.

The best place to start to prove the hardware works is always with the built-in test tones. The Center Channel must be defined.

Pioneer VSX-818V receiver. less than

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'nekkid'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

My Boyfriend was hooking up

Solution: Go to Home Depot and purchase a hammer. Store the hammer in an accessible location, near to the door and not far from a phone.
Next time your boyfriend arrives, reach for your hammer and bonk him over the head. Be sure to stay near to the phone as you'll probably need to call 911 as well as your lawyer.

It says amp err overload wat does it mean

It means it senses more sustained current passing through its output than is safe.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a root cause for intermittent shutdown.

It doesn't really have one. The DVR-Out (or any other available Line-Out) COULD provide a mixed-down analog stereo program but it won't be volume controllable from the VSX and it won't be Front-Channel specific. Sorry.

You would then connect the EQ between the chosen Line Out and the amp input. If you had a Pre-Our you would just run speaker assignment, levels, etc and have fun. With a Line Out feed you will have to ride herd on the 901 volume via its dedicated amp controls. Bummer. My older VSX-36TX allows me to have the right setup.

No picture through Pioneer VSX

Your receiver has 2 HDMI in with one HDMI out, 3 Component in and one out, and two difital optical in. If the bluray player has HDMI out this woukd be your best bet because HDMI carries the audio and video. If it has Component out, you would have to provde sound through the digital optical. Not knowing what blueray player or kind of tv you have, it's hard to advise so I may be over explaining. Anyway, we've touched on the bluray player to receiver. Out of your three HDMI slots on your receiver only one is HDMI out so make sure you're in the right one. Idaelly you have a DVD/blueray in on your receiver so on your receiver you would select "DVD" when playing. If your hook up is correct you may have to try another HDMI cable to test.

No sound from subwoofer

On screen setup needs a separate RCA video cable besides the HDMI connection. There are 3 ways to do the subwoofer. One is the rt left B speakers, which mean both A and B speakers need to be on. The other two ways is using one of the single plugs for the subswoofer on the back. The one in the middle did not work for me but the other did. Be sure to setup correctly when you can on the screen, and make sure the configuration includes a Subwoofer as one of your speakers.

Have a pioneer vsx-918v,cannot turn

All I can suggest is to completely reset the receiver back to factory standard settings. Please do the following -

While holding down the Advanced Surround button, press and hold the standby/on button for at least 3 seconds. The display should show "RESET?". Then press " ST - ". "OK?" will then show in the display. Press Sound Retriever button to confirm.

The receiver should display "OK" to show that it has been reset.

If this method does not work then it is more than likely it will need a specialist repair unfortunately.

Hope this helps

I have a pioneer vsx 818 v amp, when I set it up

Hello,
To get sound out of your surround speakers, first off go through the receiver setup and make sure that is correct. Also, usually the best soundfields to use for sourround sound is PLII Movie or dolby digital. Next , make sure the source you are viewing is capable of outputting 5.1 sourround sound. Lastly, it is a good thing to remember that sourround speakers are only intended to reproduce sound effects. You certainly can override it so that all speakers play full range audio, but that is not the intention.
Good Luck

Hi. I have just connected my Bose Acoustimass 6

Either your ambient noise level is too high for the test, or you need to increase the volume for the test tones.

For any such audio calibration testing your ambient noise level should be as quiet as possible, preferably below the measurable level of an SPL meter...usually 50dB for most models.

I just need the basic

Connect the Direct TV and the Xbox directly to the television by their respective video cables.
Then connect their audio cables to the audio inputs on the receiver.

This connection method does not require use of the monitor out terminal.

It stopped working

Connecting or disconnecting output leads while power is applied is a common way to destroy the output modules.
If you feel adventurous, remove the housing and check at the rear of the chassis for larger black epoxy encapsulated modules.
There may be two or four of the same type; one of these has probably failed unless there are fuses visible related to the output terminals.
To establish which module has failed, it may be necessary to own a multimeter of some kind so comparative measurements can be made. You can buy a meter adequate for this task at auto parts stores for under $20 US (you needn't spend more) and possibly (in the US) at Radio Shack although my last recent check of their website showed only a couple of models and those were over the stated price. If you are near a Harbor Freight Tool outlet, they typically have them for under $10 and eBay has them even cheaper:
eBay - Digital Multimeters
If you decide to 'DIY' and have the manual skills to do decent soldering with a decent iron, post back here as a comment and I will give you some instructions to follow.
The part is likely to cost under $25 US but labor will be a good bit higher.
