Dear Alex191: I am shocked and amazed that the Williams heater company is STILL knowingly and willingly selling faulty direct vent gas heaters. My problems took place in 1988! I bought a 30,000 BTU Williams DIRECT VENT from The Home Depot. I took the time to remove window sashes and run gas line to the Williams heater that I had placed in the window aperture. I was glad to finally have heat and be able to heat the area of the house where I stayed. Then I began to smell gas when the Williams was OFF. I traced it to the area where the pilot light gas tubing entered the combustion chamber. I removed the Williams unit and replaced it with an identical make and model and the SAME THING HAPPENED!!! I sat on my bed and almost cried. I had the gas company come out and they labled the problem as a "fuzz leak". The warranty repairman came out and had no idea what to do. Tightening the retaining nut did nothing. I called Williams and even back then they said that they were aware of the problem. They called me back and wanted to send me a part and asked me, "Can you work on it?" I returned the Williams and bought a Perfection-Schwank CONSOL heater that burns the air in the room and vents horizontally to a 4 inch vertical gas vent and was very satisfied with it. When they went out of business I bought an "Empire" brand gas heater. I don't know if I'll ever buy another direct vent heater from anyone. I will be glad to write an affidavit should you decide to suit the Williams company.

Air could be getting to the pilot via where the gasket was and cansing it to go out , flame inpingement

This could be a result of a couple things. First, the furnace will automatically keep running for a short period after the thermostat shuts off because it has to blow all the hot air out of the system before it shuts off, that way, your not left with alot of heat stuck inside. Second could be the thermostat itself malfunctioning, you can pick up a cheap one at a local department store and installing them are fairly easy, especially since its mostly color coded. Some thermostats have an adjustment on them to set the unit to come on before or after the temperature reaches the desired amount. Other problems may exist, but that is the most common. If your pilot light is ignighting, it means only that you are getting gas to the heater, if it doesn't stay burning after holding the button down for 30-60 seconds, it could be 1 of 2 things or even both. The second one and the easiest is that you oxygen sensor click off you flame due to you not having enuff good clean clear air coming into the machine, maybe a blockage or something...check it out, maybe us some canned air to clean it out good. The 1st. and most likely reason is your thermocoupler has gone and died on you and you need to go to the store and get one just like the one you have or at least one as long as the one you have ...hey! good luck! -Brady3"[email protected]"t

Burner not burning right yellow flame , blocked jets , black film could be soot , sounds like it needs a service

When the units were converted, did the installer also adjust the burner's air intake valve to what's required for propane? Sometimes, that's forgotten. Also, I assume all of the connections were leak tested .... not just where the conversion kits were installed, but throughout the heater? The reason I asked this, is that propane enters the heaters at a higher pressure (water column inch) than Natural Gas. Almost twice as much. In which case, it may have loosened the seals in the regulators.

Those are the things, I'd be looking at.

Hello, you can buy a thermocouple at any heating and cooling store, they cost between 7 and 15 dollars depending on the length of it.

If you mean that the pilot light does not stay lit, you could have a bad thermocouple or a loose connection at the gas valve. Make sure the flame is against the thermocouple. If you mean that the pilot won't light at all, bleed out the gas line a bit more.

Couple of quick questions: Is the pilot lit and the Control Knob turned to the ON position?
If not, turn it to the ON position.

Has the thermostat been set higher than the ambient room temperature?
If not, set the temperature at least 10 degrees higher than the ambient room temp and see it the burner lights?

Have you checked the outside vent, to make sure it's unobstructed?

If all above the above fails to provide a yes answer, then I suspect that the Thermopile has gone bad. The Thermopile generates milli-volts of electricity that opens the gas valve when your thermostat calls for heat. The heat from the pilot flame against the Thermoplie is what generates the milli-volts of electricity.

They are not difficult to replace and only requires a screw driver and an appropriately sized open end wrench to accomplish the task. You can probably order the part directly from Williams. Also, if you have misplaced your Owners Manual, ask them for one of those too. It will be of help to you now and in the future.

Check fof actual Gas ,use soap water at pilot outlet,if no bibbles try pin to unblock or beta undo & clear it, Also make sure tip of ignitors gap aint to big like one wod a spark plug, spark wont jump to lite if to larde.just rem ur workin with Gas so care! M
