You can update the maps using either Garmin or other third party maps. The accuracy will depend on how old the mapping data was that is used to create the map. So you want to find out if the map in that area is recently updated. You may also find that a regional map may show the details in some areas where a larger map won't.

To upgrade using Garmin you just go to garmins website

You may find the map update is free or you may update for a fee or get a lifetime update subscription. The gps is hooked up through the usb cable and will download and instal the updates. It's painless (sort of ;-]) and quick.

You can try contacting Garmin and seeing if they will allow you to download the map again. The file that you are looking for on the Nuvi's flash drive is "gmapprom.img". It should be within the Garmin directory on your Nuvi (using PC to Nuvi USB cable). The file will be very large, around 1GB. Download a pdf file. It should be read in all computer systems that have Adobe Reader or other pdf readers.

There is no way to perform a master rest to clear the PIN. You either have to have the PIN number or contact Garmin to unlock it for you for a fee. I would first try turning the unit on where your brother lived or where he worked and the unit will not ask for the PIN. This is called the safe location. You can then change the PIN. He probably set the PIN at some place where he knows well.

Perhaps your battery is flat. Recharge it and try again. Give it time.

If the unit is new you get a free map update within the first few months after that they will charge a fee, but you can still update the unit for software and fixes.
Here is what you need to do to update the map your Garmi nuvi 200; first make sure the unit is fully charged, then go to the Garmin web site and register your product. Next download Garmin Updater and connect your nuvi with a USB cable directly to your computer and not thru a USB hub. Let the update go directly to the GPS and not a folder. I've done it using this video and was successful, but I'm experienced making repairs like this. You decide whether this is for you or whether you should look for a repair service to do it for you.

To get personal Addresses and POI's onto your Garmin unit you will have to use a software called "POI Loader" here is a link to the software.

If you don't have lifetime updates for your Garmin you need to go to there website to purchase the updates from them. They will then offer you a lifetime package for a price. Make sure you have an account with them, you can set up one at the top of the page under My Garmin from there you should be able to purchase or receive your updates. Garmins web page is www.garmin.com

With a Nuvi, If a Garmin or Garmin compatible power cord is not used, GPS will stay on the USB Mass Storage mode and will not go to Map Screen even though connector fits fine. In this case GPS can slowly charge. So, you need to find/obtain a power supply that works right.
