Take a look at this site, http://www.garmin.be/missing.html Download and unzip the software, plug your garmin in the USB and start the updater.exe program. It gets you started again. Later on you can use the Webupdater to get possible newer software..
It worked for me and my Zumo550

IT'S EXHAUSTED THE CELLS ARE WORN,CHANGE IT

I had for 2 years a nuvi 255w and its as working real good. Until one day i tried to open it up and it ask me a code pin. Witch i dont have. Ive been the only one owner on that GPS and never put any pin code on it and now just like that it want one... Grrrr that **** me off i cant use it anymore i dont have any acess anywhere exept that pin code of 4 number,. Is this possibility of update? I dont know I am the only one in that situation?

Head over to Garmin's website, and download/Install WebUpdater. It is a free software program that will update your unit's firmware automatically.Thanks!

Hello,If the computer does not recognize the GPS as another drive, then it is possible that there is a connection problem with the cable or the internal components of the GPS are shot.Try the cable with a different device such as a digital camera or another GPS. If this works then the cable is fine, if not replace the cable with another one.It is also possible that the Garmin support staff are correct.The nuvi 255w is an older discontinued GPS and should probably be replaced with a newer unit.The normal life span for a GPS is about 3 to 4 years and that is being generous. The battery life of the GPS can only cycle so many times before it becomes completely dead.

Hello,Rebooting the Garmin Nuvi 255W is done when disconnected to external sources of power or connection to the computer.The computer connection is used to transfer map data and software updates to the GPS.The software updates are done using the Garmin WebUpdater program.

HelloThere sill be a battery symbol in the forner of the screen which sill indicate advancing the charging signal [very like battery signal of a cellphone] in green color. You can see it on its manu page. To increase the accuracy of the battery guage, gully discharge the battery and then fully charge it. Do not unplug the Nuvi, until it is totally charged. Connect the vehicle power cable to the mini USB connector on your Nuvi and to a power outlet in your vehicle. The vehicle key may need to be turned ON/ACC for Nuvi to charge. Connect an AC adapter [optional accessory] to the nuvi and a wall outlet. Connect your Nuvi to a computer using a USB cable. The computer must be ON for the nuvi to charge. OK.

The program that you downloaded was called WebUpdater. With your Garmin connected to your computer, just run the WebUpdater program (double-click it). It will install the update on your Nuvi.

you need to attach it to a pc and update the map pack

update maps software pack

make sure power cord is working properly and the connector is not damaged.

you probably just need to update the software.
