If a device is used daily it should be able to acquire satellites in a minute or less. Using a GPS device while it is outdoors with a clear view of the entire sky is the ideal condition for acquiring satellites. Please know that there can be several different factors that may cause a GPS unit to not acquire satellites:

  • If your unit is trying to acquire satellites for the first time, it may take longer than normal to establish an initial position. If the unit is powered on and outdoors with a clear view of the sky this should not take more than 3-5 minutes.
  • If your unit has not been used for an extended period of time (more then a month), it may take 3-5 minutes to acquire satellites.
  • If your unit is indoors, it may not acquire satellites. Even standing next to a window indoors will block a majority of the sky which is needed for a device to locate and lock onto a satellite signal.
  • If you have just finished updating the software in your unit or you have performed a master reset, your unit may take 3-5 minutes to acquire while outdoors as the data that is used to locate satellites may have been erased.
  • If your unit has traveled over 500 miles while turned off or not tracking your travel, it may take 3-5 minutes to acquire even in ideal conditions.
  • If your vehicle has a protective coating on its windshield or electronic devices which interfere with the unit receiving signal, your unit may need an external antenna* in order to acquire satellites.
    • If you suspect this to be an issue, try taking the unit outside of the vehicle with a clear view of the sky for 3-5 minutes so that the unit can acquire satellites. If your unit loses satellites once moved back into your vehicle you will most likely need an external antenna*.
If your unit is still having trouble acquiring satellites, please ensure that it has the latest version of operating software by using our WebUpdater program. Once your unit is updated please allow the unit to acquire satellites outdoors in a stationary position with a clear view of the sky.

You need to unlock the unit. I had the same problem with one that I have. Try this:

The No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing message could be due to the following reasons:

  • The GPS device is missing it's unlock code
  • The maps on the GPS device have been disabled
To determine the cause of the message, touch the screen until the message No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing disappears.
  • If you get a Can't Unlock Maps message following this error remove any microSD / SD cards in the device and follow the instructions below for Retrieving your unlock codes followed by the instructions for Creating an unlock file.

I can help you reset and fix your Garmin Nuvi 265W.

Getting stuck on the flashing Garmin logo, or a message about not finding any maps, are indications that the firmware / system software inside your GPS has been corrupted.

There are three steps to take to get your Nuvi 265W running like new:

  1. Back up your Favorites.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset.
  3. Download and then run Garmin WebUpdater to replace its firmware / system software.

I hope that helps.

Try a master reset:
Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} To perform a Master Reset on the nuvi 200 series device:
Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.

  1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
  2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
  3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
  4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
    • You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
  5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
  6. Touch Yes
The device will automatically reset. Follow the on screen prompts then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

Gmapprom.img file in Garmin Nuvi 205 corrupted

Hi,

I put a map into my garmin gps. The filename is gmapprom.img which I understand is the primary map for the Garmin GPS to work. Unfortunately it turn out that this is a corrupted file and now my gps does not work.

My Garmin Nuvi 205 will start, read the file, then restart again. Again, it restart by itself again, reads the file and then restart again. It could not go into the USB mode since the above start-and-restart sympton goes through over and over again and does not go into the USB mode. I understand that the Nuvi 205 will have to read the file first then goes into the USB mode. Hence if the map file is corrupted, it just keeps on reading and reading the map file relentlessly.

Please tell me what i should do without going back to Garmin to repair.

I want to update my garmin 260w with free updates

I want to update my garmin 260w with free updates on the maps. My unit is 2yrs old.

Garmin provides free updates through their website for the first 60 days after a new unit is put into service. After that, you'll have to purchase map updates. (Software updates are free, though.)

That said, you should first point your browser to www.Garmin.com and go through the process of downloading and installing their browser extension. You might have to reboot your computer or restart your browser to finish the installation.

Return to Garmin.com and register your nuvi. At some point, it will ask you to connect your nuvi to the computer via the USB cable. Do so. Your computer will also go through the process of installing the drivers necessary to view the nuvi as a storage device (so you can download photos and the like).

Once everything is up, the browser extension will tell you what the status is of your nuvi and of its maps. If you're entitled to a free map update, it will allow you to do so. If you're due for a software update, you can do that, also.

my garmin doesn't recognize an address

my garmin doesn't recognize an address

Answer

If you are having problems finding a particular address, try some of following tips. In some cases the address may be listed as being in a different city other than the one that was chosen. When the unit asks for the City Name, try choosing Search All Cities. If the address is listed under a different City Name, doing this will allow the unit to find the address. Also, when entering a street name, it is important that you leave off any direction or label. For example, if the address was 2536 SW Melrose Place, you would enter 2536 for the house number and only Melrose for the street name. Using the house number and city/state, the unit will fill in the direction (SW) and label (Place).

If you are still unable to find the address, the mapping may not have the address available yet. Please report this to our Cartography department using the Error Report Form which can be found at the following link:
http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/errorForm.jsp
