Checking router log for Motorola surfboard sb5100e

You will not be able to check what they are accessing, and I would question the validity and legality of this as they have a right to their privacy. If you are concerned that they are accessing inappropriate material (e.g. pirate sites) and it may cause you to get into trouble, then you do not have to worry. Your ISP will have a record of their IP address plus the sites they visit, although they may not keep the information for long (it varies by ISP) and if there was ever a question of who accessed the sites, you can easily show that they were in the house when the inappropriate sites were accessed.

I keep getting dropped from Xbox Live and parties

So, you're saying that before two weeks ago, you did not have this problem? If that's the case, and it used to work, I'd call the ISP for you internet, and tell them what's happening, it's possible that the route may have developed issues, and they can check to see if there's something wrong on the internet connection that's causign the problem. It's also possible that Live has contracted too many new subscribers, and in your area they've overbooked the number of available connections and are having what I call "growing pains". If it's XBox Live's issue, it can take anywhere from a few weeks to months to get enough bandwith and authentication servers up to support the increase in customers. You could try a support call to XBOX Live to see if they are having issue (most companies *won't* admit this, but some are learning that people are very understanding and will admit when it's their issue.) So, especially if you're not getting dumped on any other service (like Netflix, or Hulu, or some such service), then either the teleco/ISP can help, or LIve can help; I'd try both; but, really it will probably be just a waiting game. If you are having issues with other providers, you'd need to call the teleco, and set up a service call to do some signal analysis on your line, in case there's a crack in the line to the service box between your home and the what's called the teleco's HOME OFFICE, the green box down the street from your home. If a line is cracked, it could be corroded. One way to know this, is that this issue gets worse right after heavy storms, and the ground gets soggy from the rain, which interferes with the signal. Hope this helps.

Hi Currently i am using internet Type:

There is a configuration facility included with the modem that you should be able to access to help troubleshoot the connection. The Cable Modem has three active interfaces, the HFC, the Ethernet and the USB and each interface has both a MAC and an IP address associated with it. When operating normally it is the IP address of the HFC interface that is used for diagnostic access to the modem. However the IP address associated with the Ethernet interface is always available to the client side network, unless it has been disabled by management command. This means that a PC on the client side can access the WEB pages within the modem using the reserved address 192.168.100.1. This is a non-routed address so it cannot be reached from the Internet (routed) side of the network The SB5100 family of modems contain an internal DHCP server, which is active until the modem registers with the CMTS. In the case of a problem that prevents the modem from completing its registration, the modem can still give an IP address to the client PC to enable diagnostics access. This address is given with a very short lease (around 10 seconds) so that as soon as the registration does complete the client PC obtains its proper IP address from the core network DHCP server.

I got a NETGEAR router and I have been trying to

The Cable modem must be disconnected from the computer. You cannot use USB and Ethernet at the same time.

1. Turn off power to the Cable Modem and the Netgear Router. Do the same with the computer.
2. Connect an ethernet cable from the modem to the router's WAN (Internet) port.
3. Connect another ethernet cable from one of the remaining 4 LAN ports on the router to the computer's ethernet port.

4. Now power on the Cable Modem ONLY. Wait for the modem to sync up with your service provider
5. After about 2-5 minutes power up the router and wait about 1-2 minutes.
6. Now power on your PC.

Check and see if you have internet access. If not you may have to uninstall any cable modem software related to USB connection. if this is the case, then you may have to repeat steps 4-6.

Since most cable internet providers do not use proprietary connection settings, your internet connection should be up and running without changing any settings in the router or modem.

If this does not resolve your issues, we can continue to work with you.

I am wanting to have

You need to make sure you have the usb drivers that go with that modem installed on the lap top. I think you can get them from the manufacturers web site if you don't have the disk that has them.

Good Luck

What kind of router do I need to get so I can get wifi out of a Motorola Surfboard SB5101 Cable Modem ? My PC isn't wifi compatible but I have other equipment that are.

You will want to get a "Wireless N" Router, also known as an 802.11n Router. Price range is up to you, but here is a relatively cheap one that performs well: http://goo.gl/Szjovd

Intermittent cable or modem problem

Check the connectors on the in-house cable, if they can move in their sockets slightly, they may become intemittent as temp and humidity changes. If you can replace the cable with a new one of a known brand. If not try pushing cable plugs all the way into each socket and surrounding the plug with Blu-Tak to stop any slight movement. If this does not work, check or replace the power supply for the modem, it may be occasionally dropping its voltage, due to other power demands within your house. A good quality power supply will keep a stable voltage for your modem.

Wifi setup password

Confirm you do not have caps lock on, or are on a laptop with numlock on first. Assuming those basic settings are off, next you want to try and add the password in cleartext. In the wireless list, right click on your wifi network and select properties. Underneath the network security key should be a check box that says show characters. Click that and your password should be readable. Confirm it's correct or retype if not and try again. If that does not work you may need to log into the router itself and reset the wifi password.
